Chapter 3

The air in the solarium grew unnervingly still. The bright, cinematic lighting caught the deep lines of shock on Julian Sterling’s face. He was an elder statesman of the city's hidden power structures, a man who commanded respect from politicians and syndicate bosses alike. To see him standing there, pale and trembling, sent a ripple of unease through the gathered guests.
"Julian, step back," Richard demanded, his tone attempting to regain its authoritative edge. "This is a private family matter. The girl is having a hysterical breakdown."
Julian did not even look at Richard. He took another step toward Maya, dropping to one knee so he was eye-level with her. His polished leather shoes creaked against the marble. He reached out, his hand shaking slightly, stopping just inches from the silver ring resting against her frosting-stained dress.
"I asked you a question, young woman," Julian said, his American accent stripped of its usual smooth polish, replaced by urgent desperation. "The Orchid of the Sterling bloodline. There were only two ever cast. One is on my hand. The other belonged to my late brother. Where did you get it?"
Maya held Lily tighter, her icy gaze softening just a fraction as she looked into Julian’s eyes.
"He wasn't your late brother, Julian," Maya replied, her voice steady and clear. "He was my father."
A collective gasp swept through the room. Vanessa Cole actually dropped her smartphone, the device clattering loudly against the stone floor. Olivia Vance uncrossed her arms, her diamond-clad hands flying to her mouth in sheer disbelief.
"That's impossible," Julian whispered, tears suddenly welling in his fair, weathered eyes. "My niece... Alessia Sterling... she died in the compound fire ten years ago. We buried an empty casket."
"My father got me out before the roof collapsed," Maya said, slowly standing up, bringing Lily with her. Despite the pink frosting in her hair, she looked every inch a sovereign queen ascending a throne. "He told me to change my name. He told me to run, to hide, until the war with the northern families was over. He gave me his ring as proof of my blood."
"You're lying!" Richard shouted, his face flushing a deep, angry red. He lunged forward, grabbing Maya by the shoulder. "She's a manipulative little rat, Julian! She grew up in a trailer park in Ohio! She fabricated this entire story to steal from your family!"
Julian stood up with a speed that belied his age. His hand shot out, grabbing Richard by the throat of his expensive dress shirt, shoving the thirty-five-year-old man violently backward.

"Take your hands off my blood," Julian roared, his voice echoing with the terrifying, dormant authority of a veteran mafia boss. "If you ever touch her again, Richard, I will have you buried alive beneath this very estate."
Richard stumbled, coughing as he straightened his suit, looking around at the guests who were now staring at him not with respect, but with profound pity and fear. The dynamic of the room had shifted entirely. Maya Vance was no longer a servant. She was royalty.
