Chapter 6

Claire looked down at the matte-black card resting against the pristine white stone of the patio. The bright cinematic sunlight caught the embossed silver numbers and the distinctive Morgan family crest.

She bent down, her movements slow and deliberate, and picked up the heavy metal card.

Her expression instantly changed. The burning, reactive fury that had fueled her physical strikes vanished. In its place settled a cold, calculating, and utterly terrifying calm. She ran her thumb over the embossed numbers, her mind instantly connecting the digits to the encrypted ledgers she reviewed every single midnight in her private study.

She slowly looked from the black card in her hand to Kevin, who was just now pushing himself up onto his elbows among the spilled mustard and broken plastic.

Claire’s eyes then drifted to the edge of the lawn. She looked at Madison, who stood perfectly still. The twelve-year-old girl, with her slicked-back wavy hair and chillingly masculine demeanor, was holding a custom-made, carbon-fiber tennis racket that cost more than a standard luxury car. Piled beside Madison were a dozen massive, extravagant party gifts—gifts that Kevin had claimed he bought with his own successful investments.

"You told me the offshore liquidity was draining due to market fluctuations," Claire said, her voice eerily quiet, carrying across the silent yard.

Kevin blinked, his rosy face pale and sweating. "Claire... put the card down. That's family business. You don't understand how the accounts work."

"I don't understand?" Claire asked, taking a slow step toward him. "Kevin, who do you think authorizes the transfers? Who do you think holds the master cipher for the Cayman routing numbers?"

Richard gasped from beneath the broken cornhole boards. "What are you talking about, Claire?"

Claire ignored her father. She stared dead into Kevin’s terrified eyes.

"$1,986,400 from my account," Claire stated, the exact number rolling off her tongue with dead calm precision.

Kevin’s face went completely white. His jaw trembled. "Your account? That's Dad's money! I... I just borrowed some for Madison's tennis academy and the new cars!"

"Dad hasn't had access to the master accounts in five years," Claire said softly. "I retired him. I let him keep the title so he could play golf, and I let you keep your polo shirts so you wouldn't embarrass me. But the money? The power? It has always been mine."

She looked at the mud covering her crying three-year-old son, then back to the man who had facilitated his humiliation.

"My child’s wish was snuffed out," Claire said, her voice dropping to a lethal, freezing whisper. "And so was your life."

Kevin’s face became utterly frightened, the reality of his sister's true identity finally crashing down upon him.
