Chapter 3

The entire backyard fell into a stunned, breathless silence. The vibrant colors of the party—the red ketchup bottles, the yellow mustard, the bright green lawn—seemed to sharpen to an almost painful clarity under the natural cinematic lighting. No one moved. The guests, completely unaccustomed to anyone challenging Kevin, stared with wide eyes.
Kevin’s fair skin turned a deep, angry crimson. His arrogance, usually buoyed by the illusion of his own authority, cracked. He stepped forward, closing the distance between himself and his sister in two aggressive strides.
"You don't talk to me like that in front of my friends," Kevin hissed, stepping directly between Claire and Madison.
"I will talk to you however I please," Claire said, her voice remaining eerily calm. She didn't flinch, didn't step back. Her posture was rigidly elegant, projecting the hidden authority she wielded in the shadows of the Morgan organization.
"You are a secretary, Claire," Kevin spat, his American accent thickening with venom. "You shuffle papers. You live in my father's house. You have nothing."
"I have more power in my signet ring than you have in your entire pathetic existence," Claire whispered.
Kevin’s eyes widened with blind, impulsive rage. He grabbed Claire’s left arm, his fingers digging brutally into her skin through the silk of her blouse.
"Let go of me," Claire commanded, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper.
"I’ll teach you some respect!" Kevin roared.
Without warning, Kevin yanked her forward and violently slapped her across the face in front of every guest.
The sharp, echoing crack of his palm striking her cheek silenced the last remaining murmurs in the yard. Claire staggered sideways from the force of the blow. Her heel caught on the edge of the stone patio, and she stumbled, catching her balance just before she hit the ground. The mud from Noah’s ruined shirt was now smeared violently across the front of her elegant blouse, ruining the expensive fabric. A bright red welt immediately blossomed across her fair, rosy cheek.
Noah screamed, clinging to the back of Claire's leg. "Mommy!"
Kevin stood tall, rolling his shoulders, a grotesque, victorious smirk spreading across his face. He looked around at the silent guests, reveling in his display of physical dominance.
"It was just a silly little wish from that brat," Kevin said, his voice dripping with condescension. "Now take him inside, clean him up, and learn to keep your mouth shut."
Claire slowly turned her head. She reached up with her right hand, her fingers delicately touching the red mark on her cheek. She did not cry. She did not scream. A slow, chilling calmness washed over her features, transforming her beautiful face into a mask of pure, intimidating menace.

"You shouldn't have done that, Kevin," Claire said. Her voice wasn't shaking. It was dead calm.
"What are you going to do about it?" Kevin laughed, balling his hand into a fist.
