Chapter 4

Kevin’s smirk twisted into a sneer of utter disbelief as his sister stood her ground. "You're going to fight me? You? You're a glorified accountant, Claire!"
"I'm the one who holds your leash," Claire whispered. "And I'm letting it go."
"I'm going to knock you out," Kevin roared.
Kevin lunged forward, his heavy, polished loafer sliding across the patio as he swung his right fist in a wild, brutal arc aimed directly at Claire’s jaw.
Claire did not panic. She possessed the lethal, calculated reflexes of a woman who had survived and conquered the deepest trenches of the criminal underworld. As Kevin’s fist hurtled toward her fair face, Claire smoothly bent her knees, slipping flawlessly beneath the clumsy, telegraphed punch. The heavy swing caught nothing but empty summer air.
Using the momentum of her evasion, Claire pivoted on her high heels. Her hips torqued, channeling the full kinetic force of her body through her core. She drove a devastating, explosive counterpunch straight upward.
Her knuckles, reinforced by the heavy, solid gold of the family signet ring, connected flush with the side of Kevin’s face.
The impact produced a sickening, concussive crack.
Kevin’s eyes rolled back into his head. The sheer velocity of the strike launched his frame completely off the ground. He spun backward, his arms flailing uselessly as he lost all control of his equilibrium. He hurtled backward, directly into the folding barbecue-preparation station set up near the edge of the patio.
The impact was catastrophic.
The metal frame of the station buckled and collapsed under his dead weight. Condiment bottles—vibrant red ketchup and bright yellow mustard—burst from the shelves, exploding into the air and raining down over the pristine patio stones. Wicker bread baskets overturned, sending dozens of golden rolls scattering across the vivid green grass. Bright white paper plates exploded into the air like confetti, floating down over the chaos. Stainless steel barbecue utensils clattered and scattered violently across the stone.
Kevin crashed straight through the folding lower rack, his body coming to a violent halt amidst the twisted metal, ruined food, and shattered plastic. He lay there motionless, his expensive summer polo stained with mustard and dirt, a massive, bruising welt already forming where Claire’s ring had struck his jaw.

The entire birthday party became absolutely silent.
Not a single guest breathed. The children froze. The birds in the trees seemed to stop singing. The cinematic, bright afternoon light illuminated the total destruction of the barbecue station and the unconscious heir to the Morgan family lying in the wreckage. Claire stood over him, her chest rising and falling in measured breaths, her posture immaculate despite the mud smeared across her blouse.
