Chapter 6

The frightened whisper hung in the air between them, a devastating bomb dropped into the absolute silence of the ballroom. Isolde’s words, spoken with such raw, trembling certainty, shattered the fragile reality Lysander had been living in for the past six months.
"She starved your wife, too."
Lysander Valegrove became completely, horrifyingly still. The artistic tattoos on his hands stopped flexing. His breathing ceased. The deep, measured cadence of his existence was violently interrupted by a truth so heinous it defied comprehension. His young wife, the woman he had loved fiercely, had not died from a rapid, incurable illness as the family doctors had claimed. She had been murdered, slowly and agonizingly, under his own roof. And the woman responsible was sitting ten feet away, clutching property-transfer papers.
The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. The bright, cinematic lighting of the ballroom seemed to dim, the natural colors washing out as a cold, absolute darkness settled over his vision. He stared at Isolde, searching her expressive eyes for any sign of deception. He found only profound sorrow and terrified honesty.
Across the room, Nerissa heard the whisper. The words carried just far enough to reach her ears.
The elegant crystal champagne glass she had been clutching in her left hand slipped from her manicured fingers. It hit the polished wooden floorboards with a sharp, explosive crash, shattering into a hundred glittering pieces.
The sound broke the spell holding the room hostage.
Around them, dozens of elite gala guests, sensing the catastrophic shift in power and the impending explosion of violence, slowly lowered their fine porcelain plates to the banquet tables. The clinking of china was the only sound in the room. They stared at the head of the Valegrove family, realizing they were witnessing the birth of a massacre.
Isolde stayed close beside him. She did not let go of his wrist. Her small, trembling hands remained a physical anchor, the only thing keeping the mafia boss from tearing the room apart with his bare hands. She could feel the violent, coiled tension building in his muscular forearms.
Lysander slowly turned his head, his sharp jawline setting into a mask of pure, unadulterated vengeance. He looked at his aunt, the woman who had smiled at his wife's funeral, the woman who had just tried to strip him of his empire.
Nerissa was frozen in the upholstered chair, her face a mask of sheer terror. She looked at her two bodyguards, but the towering men were already slowly backing away, their hands raised defensively, desperate to distance themselves from the walking corpse she had just become.

"Is this true, Nerissa?" Lysander asked. His voice was no longer measured or deep. It was a hollow, echoing rasp, devoid of all humanity, the sound of a man who had already decided how the night would end.
The air in the ballroom turned freezing cold. The climax of the evening had arrived, and there was no turning back.
