Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Valegrove estate was a masterclass in American opulence, bathed in bright, cinematic light. There were no heavy, yellow tints to muddy the elegance of the evening; instead, natural, luminous lighting highlighted the rich mahogany paneling and the sparkling crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling. Sixty of the city’s most influential gala guests and staff moved like elegant phantoms around the crowded banquet tables, the air humming with the crisp sound of American accents and the clinking of fine crystal. It was a night of supposed celebration, yet beneath the surface, a venomous power struggle was silently suffocating the room.

At the edge of the sprawling banquet stood Lysander Valegrove. Thirty-one years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss. His dark hair was swept back flawlessly over a sharp, aristocratic jawline dusted with short, neat stubble. Refined, artistic tattoos graced his neck and hands, stark against the crisp white cuffs of his tailored dark suit. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch completed the image of absolute authority. Yet, the death of his young wife just months prior—supposedly from a rapid, incurable illness—had cast a long, dark shadow over his reign, leaving him momentarily vulnerable to the vultures within his own bloodline.

Tonight, the chief vulture was Nerissa Valegrove. Fifty-four years old, Lysander’s aunt and the current estate administrator, she wore an elegant, sweeping evening gown and heavy pearl jewelry that seemed to weigh her down as much as her ambition. In her hands, she clutched a thick folio of property-transfer papers. She was flanked by two massive bodyguards—one Black American and one white American—both wearing dark suits and earpieces, projecting a wall of menacing intimidation.

Lysander, feeling the exhaustion of the evening’s political maneuvering settling into his bones, turned toward the lavish buffet. His tattooed hand reached out, his fingers brushing against a simple, warm bread roll resting on a silver platter beside the crowded banquet.

Before his fingers could fully close around it, Nerissa moved with sudden, viper-like speed. Her hand shot out, her manicured nails digging into his wrist as she violently snatched the bread roll away from him.

Lysander froze, his broad shoulders tensing as he watched his aunt turn. Beside the service entrance, a few feet away, stood a wheeled catering-waste bin. Without a second thought, Nerissa threw the pristine bread roll directly into the open garbage.

Lysander stared at the discarded food, the sheer, audacious disrespect of the act echoing louder than a gunshot in the crowded room. He slowly turned his dark, intense gaze back to his aunt.

"Is this your idea of a negotiation tactic, Nerissa?" Lysander asked, his deep, measured voice slicing through the ambient noise of the gala.

Nerissa met his cold stare without flinching, a cruel, triumphant smirk playing on her lips. She tapped the property-transfer papers against her palm. "No signature. No dinner. You are losing your grip, Lysander. It is time to hand over the assets before you ruin this family completely."

Lysander stared at her, the tension in his jaw threatening to snap bone. The humiliation was public, deliberate, and designed to break him in front of his syndicate. He remained perfectly still, the danger radiating from his masculine frame.
