Chapter 10

The mass exodus from the grand ballroom was swift and silent. The elite guests, eager to escape the suffocating tension and the terrifying reality of the mafia boss's wrath, gathered their coats and hurried out the massive mahogany doors. Within minutes, the sprawling, luminous room was entirely empty, save for the abandoned champagne glasses, the scattered pearls on the floor, and the two figures standing near the service entrance.
The bright, cinematic lighting cast long shadows across the polished wooden floorboards. Lysander Valegrove stood perfectly still, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly ebbing from his system, leaving behind a profound, aching exhaustion. He looked at Isolde Fairhaven. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid was standing by the empty upholstered chair, her delicate hands clutching the pristine white apron of her black maid dress.
He walked slowly toward her, his leather shoes crunching softly on the scattered pearls. He stopped just inches away, his towering, masculine presence completely enveloping her smaller frame.
"Are you unharmed, Isolde?" Lysander asked, his deep voice softening into a register he reserved only for her.
"I am fine, sir," Isolde whispered, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "But your hand..."
She reached out, gently taking his right hand again. The angry red marks from Nerissa's nails were stark against the artistic tattoos. Without asking permission, Isolde lifted his hand, pressing a soft, trembling kiss against his bruised knuckles.
Lysander’s breath hitched. He closed his eyes, the simple, tender gesture breaking through the impenetrable armor he had worn for the past six months. He pulled his hand free, only to reach up and gently frame her beautiful, softly oval face with both hands.
"Do you know how long I have waited for someone to look at me with genuine care, rather than fear or ambition?" Lysander asked, his thumbs lightly brushing across her rosy cheeks.
"You don't have to wait anymore, Lysander," Isolde said softly, her expressive eyes shining with quiet, unwavering devotion. "I am here."
"Are you prepared for the consequences of standing by my side?" Lysander asked, his expression growing serious. "Nerissa was right about one thing. The other families will view this internal fracture as an opportunity. There will be challengers. There will be violence. My world is not a safe place for a gentle woman."
"Did you think I was gentle when I kicked that bin into her legs?" Isolde asked, a faint, defiant smile touching her lips.
Lysander let out a low, rumbling chuckle, a sound that hadn't echoed in the estate in a very long time. "No, I suppose not. You are far braver than any soldier in my syndicate."
"I will stay with you, Lysander. Whatever comes," Isolde promised, leaning into his warm palms.
Lysander leaned down, closing the distance between them, and pressed a deep, lingering kiss to her forehead, sealing the quiet, mutual affection that had finally been brought into the light.
But as he held her in the quiet ballroom, a sharp, urgent knock echoed from the heavy oak doors at the far end of the hall. Lysander pulled back slightly, his sharp jawline tightening instantly as the cold, calculating mask of the mafia boss returned.
"Will you enter?" Lysander called out.
His lead enforcer stepped into the room, his face grim under the bright chandeliers.

"Boss, we have a problem," the enforcer reported, his voice tight. "The holding cell is empty. The guards are unconscious. Nerissa is gone."
Lysander’s eyes darkened to pitch. The immediate threat was not eliminated; it had simply escaped into the night, armed with the secrets of his empire and a burning desire for revenge. He looked down at Isolde, the protective instinct surging through his veins. The true war for the Valegrove syndicate had only just begun.
