Chapter 2

The heavy, suffocating silence that followed Nerissa's audacious act seemed to stretch into eternity. The bright, cinematic lighting of the ballroom illuminated the stark contrast between the towering, masculine mafia boss and the vicious, calculating aunt who sought to usurp him. Lysander Valegrove did not shout. He did not move to strike her. His stillness was far more terrifying than any sudden outburst of violence. His dark eyes remained fixed on the property-transfer papers in her hands, calculating the depth of the betrayal unfolding in his own home.

From the periphery of the service entrance, a figure moved with quiet, desperate urgency. Isolde Fairhaven, a twenty-five-year-old housemaid, possessed a delicate, breathtaking beauty that was usually hidden in the shadows of the estate. Her highly expressive eyes were wide with genuine terror, and her dark hair was neatly pinned beneath a white lace maid headband. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a pristine white apron, and practical flats that made almost no sound on the polished wooden floorboards.

Isolde had watched the entire exchange from the edge of the room. She saw the malicious glint in Nerissa’s eyes and the dangerous, coiled tension in Lysander’s broad shoulders. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. In the dangerous world of the Valegrove syndicate, a housemaid stepping into a dispute between family members was a fatal error. Yet, seeing the man she secretly, deeply cared for being humiliated in front of his peers overrode every instinct of self-preservation she possessed.

Isolde immediately approached the confrontation, her dark eyes filling with overwhelming concern. She didn't look at Nerissa or the towering bodyguards. She focused entirely on Lysander.

She stepped into his personal space, a realm usually reserved for extreme violence or intimate affection. With a grace that belied her terror, Isolde reached out. Her small, fair hands gently supported Lysander’s elbow, a touch so light yet incredibly grounding. In her other hand, she held a fresh, warm bread roll she had quietly retrieved from a secondary tray.

With trembling fingers, she slipped the fresh roll directly into his large, tattooed hand.

"Sir… take mine," Isolde whispered softly, her American accent cracking with frightened devotion.

Lysander’s breath hitched almost imperceptibly. He slowly turned his head, pulling his intense gaze away from his aunt to look down at the housemaid standing beside him. The sheer bravery of her act—defying the estate administrator in a room full of dangerous men just to offer him a piece of bread—was staggering.

He met her worried, expressive eyes, finding a sudden, fierce sanctuary in their depths. The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss softened for a fraction of a second. He did not ask a question. He simply looked at her, communicating a profound, silent gratitude that words could never capture.

Nerissa, watching the quiet, intimate exchange between the terrifying boss and the lowly housemaid, felt her blood boil. The narrative of her dominance was being rewritten by a servant. Her face flushed an ugly red, her elegant facade cracking completely.

"How dare you interfere?" Nerissa hissed, her voice venomous as she stepped aggressively toward Isolde.
