Chapter 5

The heavy doors clicked shut, plunging the vast, luminous conservatory into a profound, ringing silence. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light over the abandoned gold-rimmed porcelain and half-empty crystal wine glasses. The opulent space, designed for celebration, now felt empty and hollow.
Bastian stood silently for a moment, his broad shoulders rising and falling with a slow, controlled breath. The betrayal was absolute, the upcoming syndicate war with Rosalyn’s father inevitable, but the immediate, toxic sickness within his home had been surgically removed.
He turned his body, his polished leather shoes pivoting seamlessly on the floor, and walked toward the three figures remaining by the head table.
Mira was kneeling on the floor, holding Evan tightly in her arms. The sophisticated black maid dress contrasted sharply with the boy’s cream shirt and dark waistcoat. Evan had buried his face in the crook of Mira’s neck, his small body trembling from the shouting and the sudden violence of Rosalyn’s removal. Mira was gently stroking the child's hair, her softly oval face etched with deep, maternal concern. Bruno let out a soft whine, nuzzling his graying muzzle against Evan’s polished shoes.
Bastian stopped beside them, his imposing, masculine frame casting a protective shadow over the housemaid, his son, and the loyal dog.
"Are you unharmed, Evan?" Bastian asked, his deep voice softening significantly, losing its lethal, interrogative edge as he crouched down beside them.
Evan turned his head, his fair, rosy cheeks stained with fresh tears. He looked at his father, his eyes searching for reassurance. "I'm sorry, Dad. I didn't mean to ruin the dinner."
"Would telling the truth to protect the people in this house ever be considered a crime?" Bastian asked, reaching out to gently cup his son’s cheek.
Evan sniffled, leaning heavily into his father's large, tattooed hand. "No."
"Are you a brave boy?" Bastian asked, his thumb brushing away a tear.
"Yes, Dad," Evan nodded, his small chin trembling.
Bastian shifted his gaze to Mira. The beautiful housemaid was watching him, her expressive brows drawn together in quiet empathy. She had risked her job, her physical safety, and her life by kneeling beside a mafia boss's son and corroborating his story against a powerful socialite. The loyalty and raw courage she had displayed was a rare, precious commodity in Bastian's dark, violent world.
"Are you injured, Mira?" Bastian asked, his cold, perceptive eyes scanning her delicate cheekbones and fair skin.
"No, Mr. Calder," Mira answered softly, her elegant posture unwavering even as she knelt on the floor. "I am perfectly fine."
"Will you take Evan up to the nursery and stay with him until I come for him?" Bastian asked, holding her gaze with an intensity that sent a sudden, warm flutter through Mira’s chest.
"Yes, Mr. Calder," Mira replied, her rosy cheeks flushing slightly under his intense focus.
Bastian stood up, watching as the beautiful housemaid gently helped his son to his feet. He snapped his fingers softly, and two of his guards stepped out of the shadows to carefully lift the injured German shepherd on the blanket, carrying the dog toward the estate's private veterinary suite.

The impending war with the Voss syndicate loomed over him like a dark storm cloud, but as he watched Mira lead his son out of the conservatory, he knew his house finally felt like a home again.
"Shall we prepare for what comes next?" Bastian asked the empty room, turning toward his private study.
