Chapter 1

The grand conservatory of Bastian Calder’s mansion was a breathtaking display of architectural brilliance and exorbitant wealth. Beneath the sweeping curve of the glass ceiling, cascading crystal chandeliers were suspended like frozen waterfalls, spreading a brilliantly warm, golden light across the room. The luxurious glow reflected off cream marble columns and towering gilded mirrors, wrapping the space in an elegant, airy warmth. Polished walnut dining tables were perfectly arranged, surrounded by plush champagne velvet chairs. Tall ivory candles flickered gently inside heavy silver candelabras, their flames dancing among lush centerpieces of pristine white roses. Crystal glasses and fine gold-rimmed porcelain gleamed under the generous illumination, which clearly revealed every face in the crowded room. The guests, an assembly of the city’s most powerful and dangerous elite, possessed fair, rosy skin and spoke in melodic, confident American accents, their laughter filling the fragrant air of the evening birthday dinner.
At the head of the most prominent table sat Bastian Calder, a mafia boss whose reputation for ruthless efficiency was masked only by his movie-star handsome features. His powerful, broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. He possessed an angular face with a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly across his fair forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes surveyed the room with the calculation of an apex predator. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers with generous, elegant spacing, catching the light whenever he adjusted his heavy family signet ring or expensive wristwatch. A small, intricate neck tattoo peeked from above his crisp white collar.
Standing opposite him was Rosalyn Voss, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She was a vision in a sculpted burgundy satin gown that clung perfectly to her slender silhouette. Diamond earrings flashed against her rosy complexion, matching the heavy engagement ring on her finger. She possessed elegant manners and offered a carefully reassuring public smile to the passing guests, playing the role of the perfect future bride.
Moving silently near the head table was Mira Bennett. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid was breathtakingly beautiful, possessing a softly oval face, expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones. Her fair skin caught the golden light, and her hair was gathered into a neat, loose braided chignon. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, a crisp white collar, and matching cuffs completed her immaculate uniform.
Mira crouched beside a folded blanket resting on the polished floor near the table. Lying on the blanket was Bruno, an elderly ten-year-old German shepherd and the beloved family companion. A clean white bandage wrapped tightly around the dog's injured front leg. Standing exceptionally close to Mira was seven-year-old Evan Calder, Bastian’s son. Dressed in a cream shirt, a dark waistcoat, and polished shoes, the boy was quiet and visibly frightened. His small fingers gripped the fabric of Mira’s white apron tightly as she set a small water bowl beside the dog's resting head.
Bastian’s cold eyes shifted downward, noticing the stark white bandage on the dog’s leg and the sheer, trembling terror etched into his son’s face. He looked directly into Mira’s expressive eyes.
"Mira. Why is Bruno hurt?"
His deep, low voice was perfectly measured, carrying a controlled pause after her name. The sheer authority in his tone sliced through the room. Instantly, every single guest stopped eating and speaking, turning their heads toward the mafia boss.
Rosalyn met Bastian’s gaze with a faint, sympathetic smile. She gave a small, sorrowful breath, her eyes frantically searching his expression for acceptance.
"It attacked Evan, darling," Rosalyn said, her American accent smooth and rehearsed.
Bastian rose slowly from his champagne velvet chair. He moved with predatory grace, stepping beside Evan and placing his imposing, masculine frame directly between Rosalyn and the group. He rested a large, tattooed hand gently on Evan’s small shoulder.
Mira met Bastian’s eyes. Tears gathered rapidly beneath her lower eyelids, her inner brows lifting in an expression of profound, restrained distress.
"Bruno was protecting Evan," Mira said, her voice staying incredibly soft and strained.
May you like
Evan looked directly at Rosalyn, his inner brows lifting helplessly as his fingers tightened around Mira’s apron. With a wounded, absolute certainty, the little boy whispered, "From you."
Bastian held Evan’s gaze for a brief, incredibly still beat. Then, he slowly shifted his eyes toward Rosalyn, followed by a slight, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw firmed almost imperceptibly. He locked onto Rosalyn, holding her eyes in a cold, unwavering stare. The entire room remained dead silent, paralyzed by the overwhelming tension.
