Chapter 10

Mira rushed forward and pushed open the heavy wooden door to Evan's nursery. The room was dark, but the emergency lights from the hallway cast long shadows across the floor. Evan was huddled under his bed, his hands covering his ears, trembling violently.

"Evan, it's me," Mira whispered, dropping to her knees and reaching under the bed frame.

The boy scrambled out, throwing his arms around her neck and burying his face in her sophisticated black maid dress. Mira held him tightly, her softly oval face buried in his hair, tears of profound relief sliding down her delicate cheekbones.

Bastian stood in the doorway, his broad, powerful shoulders filling the frame. His customized weapon hung loosely at his side. He watched the two people who mattered most to him holding each other, his cold, perceptive eyes softening completely.

"Are we secure to move to the bunker?" Bastian asked his comms earpiece, breaking the silence.

"Yes, Boss!" his security chief shouted over the radio. "The Voss mercenaries are retreating! We have them pinned at the breach! The police are three minutes out. They overplayed their hand."

"Will you ensure none of them escape the perimeter alive?" Bastian asked coldly.

"We are mopping them up now, sir."

Bastian released the button. He walked into the nursery, crouching down beside Mira and Evan. He placed a large, tattooed hand on the back of his son's head, pulling the boy and the housemaid into a fierce, protective embrace.

"Are we safe now, Dad?" Evan asked, his voice muffled against Mira's shoulder.

"Would I ever let them reach you?" Bastian asked, kissing the top of his son's head.

He looked up at Mira. The beautiful housemaid was covered in plaster dust, her white apron stained and ruined, but she possessed a quiet, radiant strength that rivaled any queen.

"Will you follow me to the safe room until the estate is fully cleared?" Bastian asked.

"Yes, Bastian," Mira said, using his first name naturally, the boundary of employer and employee permanently erased by the fire of the evening.

They stood up together. Bastian lifted Evan effortlessly into his arms, carrying the boy against his chest. He offered his free hand to Mira. She took it without hesitation, feeling the solid, undeniable weight of his family signet ring pressing against her skin.

They walked out of the nursery, leaving the ruined, smoking hallway behind them. As they descended into the subterranean safety of the mansion's bunker, the heavy steel doors sealed shut behind them, cutting off the noise of the dying skirmish above.

The bunker was brightly lit, stocked with supplies and comfortable cots. Bastian set Evan down on a bed, the boy already half-asleep from the adrenaline crash.

Bastian turned to face Mira, his movie-star handsome face illuminated by the harsh, clinical light of the safe room.

"Are you prepared for the reality of this life, Mira?" Bastian asked quietly, stepping into her personal space. "The world outside these walls is dangerous. My enemies are dead today, but there will always be others."

"Are you asking if I am afraid to stand beside you?" Mira asked, answering his question with one of her own, a spark of defiant courage in her expressive eyes.

"I am asking if you understand that once you step fully into my life, there is no stepping back," Bastian stated, his deep voice a low, mesmerizing whisper.

Mira held his gaze, her heart fluttering against her ribs. She had seen the monster he could be to his enemies, but she had also seen the man who would walk through fire for his family.

"Do you believe I would ever want to step back, Bastian?" Mira asked softly.

"Shall we face whatever comes next together?" Bastian asked.

He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a profound, searing kiss—a promise sealed in the bright, luminous safety of the bunker. The war was far from over, but the empire had finally found its true heart, ready to burn the city to ash to protect what was theirs.
