Chapter 2

The silence in the grand conservatory was a physical, suffocating pressure. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light, but the luxurious atmosphere had instantly frozen into something sharp and dangerous. The fifty elite guests sat completely immobilized in their champagne velvet chairs, their crystal glasses forgotten on the polished walnut tables. The bright, generous illumination left absolutely no place for Rosalyn to hide the sudden, panicked pallor that drained the rosy warmth from her fair skin.
Bastian did not explode into the violent rage for which he was feared throughout the underworld. The absolute stillness of his powerful, masculine frame was infinitely more terrifying. He kept his large, tattooed hand resting gently on Evan’s small, trembling shoulder, a physical anchor for the frightened child.
"Do you expect me to believe a loyal animal would turn on my own blood, Rosalyn?" Bastian asked.
His deep, low voice echoed off the gilded ceiling moldings and the cream marble columns. He spoke exclusively in questions, a chilling linguistic habit that stripped away all defenses and demanded absolute, unvarnished truth. The measured pauses between his words acted like the tightening of a noose.
Rosalyn’s sculpted burgundy satin gown rustled loudly in the silent room as she took a frantic half-step backward. Her carefully reassuring public smile completely disintegrated, replaced by a mask of primal terror.
"Bastian, darling, please," Rosalyn gasped, her voice pitching high and breathless. "He is just a child! He is confused! The dog snapped at him, and I simply tried to pull him away! The maid is lying to you! She has been trying to poison him against me!"
"Would my son fabricate a nightmare to destroy the foundation of our impending marriage?" Bastian inquired, his cold, perceptive eyes narrowing into lethal slits.
"He hates me!" Rosalyn cried, pointing a shaking, diamond-adorned finger at the little boy. "He has never accepted me! He wants to ruin our evening!"
Mira instinctively shifted her graceful posture, placing herself slightly more in front of Evan, shielding him from the socialite’s venomous glare. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs beneath her black maid dress, but she held her ground, trusting the terrifying man standing beside her to see the truth.
"Are you accusing my son of deceit to cover your own cruelty?" Bastian asked, his head tilting a fraction of an inch.
"No! I would never!" Rosalyn shrieked, looking frantically around the room at the seated guests, silently begging someone—anyone—to intervene on her behalf. But the wealthy crowd sat paralyzed, utterly unwilling to cross the most dangerous man in the city.
Bastian slowly swept his cold, observant gaze across the room, taking in the numerous guests sitting frozen among the white roses and silver candelabras.
"Have you all finished your meals?" Bastian asked the room at large.
It was phrased as a question, but the absolute command hidden within it was unmistakable. Chairs scraped violently against the polished floors as the guests practically scrambled to their feet. There were no courteous farewells, no lingering handshakes. Men in tailored suits and women in elegant gowns fled the bright, elegant room with frantic urgency, desperate to escape the blast radius of Bastian Calder’s wrath.

Within ninety seconds, the expansive conservatory was completely empty, save for Bastian, Rosalyn, Mira, Evan, and the injured dog resting on the folded blanket. The heavy wooden doors slammed shut in the distance, sealing the room and locking Rosalyn inside with her greatest mistake.
"Did you truly believe you could raise a hand to my child and remain seated at my table?" Bastian asked, turning his terrifying, unwavering focus entirely back to the woman in the burgundy gown.
