Chapter 6

The metallic clatter of the basin echoed and died, leaving a ringing, heavy silence in the brightly lit maternity suite. The water dripped steadily from Margaret’s ruined blouse, pooling in dark, ugly puddles around her expensive heels. She was trembling, entirely stripped of the arrogant, commanding presence she had carried into the room.

The Charge Nurse, demonstrating an incredible amount of professional nerve, stepped forward from the medical cart. She reached into the bassinet with her gloved hands and carefully slid the broken identification bracelet completely off the newborn's ankle.

She held the severed plastic band up in the bright, neutral white light, presenting it to Adrian like a crucial piece of forensic evidence.

"Mr. Moretti," the nurse said, her American accent steady despite the terrifying domestic warfare occurring in her ward. "These bands cannot be slipped off. They cannot be accidentally broken. This was cut with a sharp instrument, likely medical shears, and then pressed back together to appear intact."

Adrian looked at the broken band. The loose strands of wavy hair falling over his forehead shadowed his cold, intimidating eyes. He slowly moved his towering, masculine frame, stepping deliberately between his dripping, panicked mother and the bassinet holding his son. He became an impenetrable, tailored wall of dark fabric and lethal intent.

As if summoned by the escalating threat level, the heavy suite door silently glided open. Two massive, white American men wearing professional dark suits stepped perfectly into the threshold. They were Adrian’s elite bodyguards. They did not speak. They did not draw their weapons. They simply stood shoulder-to-shoulder, their fair, rosy faces devoid of all emotion, waiting for their Boss to give the command to violently clear the room.

Margaret looked at the bodyguards blocking the only exit. Her breath hitched. The reality of her situation finally shattered her delusion. She was not a mother correcting an erring son; she was an intruder who had just committed treason against a Mafia Boss.

Adrian tilted his head slightly, his sharp, angular jawline ticking as he stared down at the woman who gave him life. He spoke slowly, his deep, raspy voice dropping to a low, incredibly dangerous whisper that chilled the blood of everyone in the room.

"If the pigment was meant to prove his skin was dark," Adrian measured each word carefully, "and Emma’s infidelity was your only concern..."

He took one slow step toward her, his polished leather shoes splashing slightly in the dark puddle on the floor.

"Then why," Adrian asked, his voice lethally calm, "was my son’s ID bracelet removed?"

Margaret’s face went completely blank.

The color entirely drained from her cheeks, leaving her fair skin looking like a porcelain death mask. Her lips parted, but no sound emerged. The fabricated excuse of exposing a cheating wife had just collided violently with a terrifying, undeniable logistical truth. You don't cut a baby's ID bracelet to prove who the father is. You cut a baby's ID bracelet when you are planning to switch the baby entirely.
