Chapter 2

The sudden, piercing volume of Margaret’s shout shattered the peaceful atmosphere of the maternity suite. Emma gasped, her heart rate spiking instantly as the monitors beside her bed began to beep with rapid, frantic urgency. She forced herself upright, ignoring the searing pain in her abdomen, her fair skin flushing with a panicked, rosy heat.
"What are you talking about?!" Emma cried out, her American accent breaking with raw emotion. She strained her neck, trying to see into the bassinet, but Margaret’s imposing figure blocked her view entirely. "Get away from him! Mom, get her away from my baby!"
"Margaret, have you lost your mind?!" Linda yelled, jumping up from her chair so fast it tipped backward and crashed onto the polished floor. She lunged toward the bassinet, her cardigan slipping off her shoulder. "Step away from my grandson right now!"
Before Linda could physically shove the older woman aside, the heavy suite door swung open. The Charge Nurse, a highly efficient forty-two-year-old woman, rushed into the bright, cinematic light of the room. She wore crisp, vibrant blue hospital scrubs, sterile gloves, and a laminated ID badge clipped to her chest. Her fair, rosy face was set in a mask of intense professional alarm.
"What is happening in here? I heard shouting," the nurse demanded, her sharp American accent cutting through the escalating chaos. She moved with practiced speed, stepping expertly between the arguing grandmothers and peering directly into the clear plastic bassinet.
The nurse gasped. The newborn’s normally fair, rosy skin was covered in alarming, dark, unnatural patches across his arms and cheeks.
"Oh my god, what is wrong with his skin?!" Margaret shrieked theatrically, pressing a hand to her expensive blouse. "Look at him! He is dark! I told my son this woman was unfaithful! She has brought a bastard into our family!"
"Shut your mouth!" Linda screamed, tears of absolute fury welling in her eyes.
The Charge Nurse ignored the screaming women. Relying on her medical training, she reached into the bassinet and gently lifted the newborn away from the bedding. She quickly turned toward the medical cart resting against the wall. With her gloved hand, she snatched a sterile white gauze pad from an open package.
"Give him to me!" Emma begged desperately, extending her arms toward the nurse. Tears streamed down her cheeks, her hospital gown slipping as she fought against the IV lines tethering her to the bed. "Please, let me see my baby!"
The nurse held the infant securely under the bright, neutral white lighting. She pressed the white gauze pad against the baby’s ankle, right above the identification bracelet, and wiped firmly.
When the nurse pulled the gauze away, a thick, greasy black streak immediately transferred onto the pristine white fabric. Beneath the smear, the baby’s natural, fair, and rosy skin was perfectly unharmed and clear.
The room fell into a sudden, stunned silence. The nurse stared at the blackened gauze, her professional alarm instantly hardening into a cold, furious realization. She turned her head, her eyes locking onto Margaret Moretti with absolute, uncompromising disgust.

"That is pigment," the nurse said coldly.
Emma froze, her outstretched hands trembling in the air as the sheer, malicious cruelty of her mother-in-law’s actions washed over her. Margaret’s theatrical panic faltered for a fraction of a second, her lips parting as she realized the medical professional had instantly seen through the deception.
