Chapter 5

The room was suffocatingly tense, the bright video colors of the hospital suite seeming to sharpen under the sheer pressure of Adrian’s fury. Margaret took a rubbing step backward, massaging her bruised wrist, her fair and rosy complexion now a sickly shade of white. She believed, for a fraction of a second, that Adrian releasing her meant he was willing to listen to reason. She was entirely wrong.

Adrian gently, meticulously placed his sleeping son back into the clear plastic bassinet. He ensured the white hospital blanket was securely tucked around the infant, moving with a tenderness that completely contradicted the violent aura radiating from his tailored dark suit.

Once his son was safe, Adrian turned slowly back to the medical cart. Resting beside the packages of white gauze pads was a stainless steel rinse basin, filled to the brim with warm water that the nurse had intended to use for the baby's sponge bath. It was the same water the nurse had quickly dipped the pigment-stained gauze into, leaving the liquid cloudy and black.

Without a single word, Adrian reached out and grabbed the edge of the metal rinse basin with his large, masculine hand.

He pivoted on his polished leather shoes, moving with a smooth, terrifying grace. Before Margaret could even register his intent or raise her hands in defense, Adrian swung the basin upward and violently dumped the entirety of the black-stained water directly across Margaret’s chest.

The shock of the cold water hitting her was audible. Margaret let out a piercing, hysterical shriek. The murky, black-tinted liquid splashed aggressively across her face, ruining her perfect hair, and cascaded heavily down the front of her incredibly expensive, tailored white silk blouse. Dark, greasy streaks ran rapidly down the exact clothes she had so carefully tried to protect from the newborn just moments before. The pristine fabric was instantly, irrevocably ruined, clinging wetly to her shivering frame.

"Adrian!" Margaret screamed, her voice cracking as she looked down at her ruined attire in absolute, unadulterated horror. She wiped the dirty water from her eyes, her jewelry dripping onto the pristine hospital tiles.

Linda covered her mouth with both hands, stunned into silence by the sudden, deeply humiliating retaliation. Emma watched from the bed, her tears momentarily pausing as she witnessed her husband’s uncompromising defense of their family.

"Are you insane?!" Margaret wailed, looking up at her son with wide, terrified eyes. "Adrian, I was only protecting you! Emma is playing you for a fool, and you are attacking your own mother over a cheap hospital gown!"

Adrian stood perfectly still, the empty metal basin hanging loosely from his hand. The natural cinematic light pouring through the windows caught the cold, unforgiving angles of his face. He spoke slowly, with controlled pauses, his deep voice carrying a lethal, icy resonance.

"You think this is about her fidelity," Adrian whispered. "You think you can walk into my stronghold, defile my bloodline with cheap parlor tricks, and claim it is for my protection?"

He dropped the metal basin. It hit the tiled floor with a deafening, metallic crash that made everyone in the room flinch. Everyone except Adrian.
