Chapter 4

The sheer cruelty of the boy’s words hung in the warm summer air, wrapping around Jessamine’s throat like a vice. They always get the food. This wasn't an isolated incident. This was a pattern. A systematic, deliberate starvation of her sweet, innocent child whenever she turned her back. Jessamine stared down at the gourmet meals resting on the bed of ice, her vision swimming with tears of maternal anguish and blinding, white-hot fury.
As she stared into the depths of the blue cooler, a slight discrepancy caught her eye. Beneath the clear plastic containers, wedged tightly against the inner wall of the cooler and partially obscured by a bag of melting ice, was a thick, manila envelope. It was folded in half, the heavy paper contrasting sharply with the bright plastic packaging of the food. It had no business being hidden inside a food cooler.
Jessamine reached down, her fingers brushing the freezing ice as she pulled the folded envelope free. It was surprisingly heavy, sealed with a thick strip of clear tape.
Behind her, the scrape of high heels against the stone patio broke her concentration. Marcelline had managed to push herself up from the ground. Her crimson dress was stained with black soot, and a thin trickle of blood ran down her fair, rosy cheek where the porcelain had sliced her skin. But the moment Marcelline saw the envelope in Jessamine’s hands, her expression shifted from bruised pride to absolute, raw panic.
Without a word, Marcelline lunged forward. She moved with a desperate, animalistic ferocity, completely abandoning her elegant poise. Her manicured hands clawed through the air, aiming directly for the manila envelope.
Jessamine, however, was younger, faster, and unhindered by towering heels. Sensing the movement, she pivoted sharply on her flats, twisting her torso out of Marcelline’s reach. Marcelline’s hands caught the fabric of Jessamine’s silk blouse, ripping a button free, but Jessamine pulled her arm high, keeping the envelope safely out of reach. With her free hand, Jessamine shoved Marcelline hard in the chest, pushing the older woman back against the edge of the buffet table.

The guests gasped collectively, a few of the men taking half a step forward as if to intervene, but the sheer ferocity radiating from Jessamine kept them frozen in place.
Breathing heavily, Jessamine took two steps back, putting solid distance between herself and Marcelline. She ripped the clear tape off the envelope with a sharp, violent tear. Her eyes never left Marcelline’s face as she pried the flap open, her fingers sliding inside to grip the thick stack of folded documents hidden within. Marcelline gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles white, her chest heaving as she realized she had lost the physical battle. No dialogue was spoken, but the deafening silence screamed of a catastrophic secret about to be exposed.
