Chapter 2

From across the patio, Jessamine’s maternal instincts screamed like a blaring siren. She hadn't heard the entire exchange, but she had seen the violent shove, the rigid posture of her terrified son, and the vile, blackened lump of charcoal dropped onto his plate. The words starve again carried just enough over the clinking of champagne flutes to reach her ears, freezing the blood in her veins.
For a fraction of a second, the world seemed to move in slow motion. The vibrant, bright colors of the party blurred into streaks of light as Jessamine broke into a sprint. Her leather flats slapped against the stone patio, her beautiful face twisting from a mask of polite social grace into one of pure, unadulterated rage. Guests stepped back, sensing the sudden, violent shift in the atmosphere. The polite chatter died in her wake.
Jessamine reached the table before Marcelline could even straighten her posture. Without a single word of hesitation, Jessamine’s hand shot out and snatched the heavy porcelain plate from in front of her son. The burnt hamburger and blackened bread slid toward the edge of the dish as Jessamine pivoted her weight, utilizing the momentum of her sprint. With a primal, guttural sound of sheer maternal fury, she hurled the plate straight at Marcelline’s face.
The impact was devastatingly precise. The thick porcelain struck Marcelline squarely across the cheekbone and shattered into dozens of jagged, flying pieces. A cloud of black ash from the burnt meat exploded into the air, coating Marcelline’s flawless skin and elegant crimson dress. The sheer force of the blow, combined with her unstable towering heels, caused Marcelline to lose her balance entirely. She let out a sharp, undignified shriek as her ankles gave way, sending her crashing hard onto the stone patio floor. Her gold bracelets scraped against the rough pavers with a painful screech.
The entire backyard fell dead silent. The jazz music playing from the outdoor speakers seemed to mock the sudden, suffocating tension. White American relatives and family friends, all dressed in their bright, appropriate party clothing, stood frozen like mannequins, their fair faces caught in various stages of shock and horror. Lily finally stopped chewing, her eyes wide as she stared down at her mother sprawled on the ground.
Jessamine didn't look at the crowd. Her chest heaved beneath her silk blouse, her hands curled into tight fists at her sides, shaking with an adrenaline-fueled rage that threatened to consume her entirely. She stepped over the shattered porcelain, placing herself directly between the fallen woman and her trembling four-year-old son.

"Again?" Jessamine screamed, the word tearing through the silence like a gunshot. Her voice was raw, vibrating with a terrifying intensity. She looked down at Marcelline, who was clutching her bleeding cheek, her elegant facade completely shattered. "What does she mean, again?"
Marcelline spat a mouthful of ash onto the stone, her eyes flashing with a mixture of shock and deep, venomous hatred, but she remained silent, breathing heavily as she glared up at the woman standing over her.
