Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured over the sprawling suburban backyard, casting everything in hyper-vibrant, cinematic colors. The freshly cut lawn was an impossible shade of emerald green, contrasting sharply with the bright white linen of the patio tables and the dazzling azure of the swimming pool. It was a picture-perfect gathering of affluent family and friends. Laughter floated through the warm air, mingling with the rich, smoky scent of roasting meats. Jessamine stood near the edge of the patio, looking beautiful like a movie star in a crisp white silk blouse, fitted designer jeans, and comfortable leather flats. The sunlight caught the diamond wedding ring on her left hand, casting fractured rainbows across her fair, rosy skin. Despite the idyllic setting, her eyes were constantly scanning the crowd for her four-year-old son, Piers.
Piers was petite and agonizingly adorable, the kind of child whose big, soulful eyes and delicate features instantly made anyone with a heart want to wrap him in a protective embrace. He was lingering near the edge of the barbecue station, his fair cheeks flushed pink from the summer heat. Standing nearby was Lily, an eight-year-old girl with perfectly braided blonde hair and the same rosy complexion shared by all the guests. Lily was happily seated at a heavy wrought-iron patio table, chewing contentedly on a perfectly cooked, succulent piece of grilled meat. The juices glistened in the bright light, a testament to the feast prepared for the gathering.
Suddenly, the tranquil atmosphere shattered. Marcelline, the thirty-six-year-old hostess, moved with predatory speed. She wore an elegant, tightly fitted crimson dress that hugged her sharp figure, accessorized with heavy gold earrings, a matching bracelet, and towering heels that clicked menacingly against the stone pavers. Without warning, Marcelline’s manicured hand shot out, grabbing Piers roughly by the back of his small plaid shirt. The boy gasped, his tiny feet lifting off the ground for a fraction of a second before Marcelline forcefully shoved him down into a hard metal chair beside her daughter.
Piers trembled, his small hands gripping the edge of the table. Marcelline turned to the grill, ignoring the fresh, sizzling cuts of steak. Instead, she reached into the far corner of the grates with a pair of silver tongs and pulled out a completely blackened, carbonized hamburger patty. It was nothing more than a charred disk of ash. She dropped it unceremoniously onto Piers’s pristine porcelain plate, following it with two pieces of blackened, burnt bread. The smell of acrid smoke immediately overpowered the sweet aroma of the barbecue.
Lily didn't even look up, continuing to happily chew her flawless meal. Marcelline leaned over the table, her elegant frame casting a dark, sharp shadow over the small, terrified boy. She gripped the back of his chair, her knuckles turning white, her fair skin pulling taut over her sharp cheekbones.
"I don't want it," Piers whimpered, his voice barely a breath, his rosy cheeks losing their color.

Marcelline tilted her head, her eyes narrowing with a cruel, threatening intensity that made the surrounding bright colors seem to dim. She leaned in so close that Piers could feel the heat of her breath against his face.
"Eat," Marcelline hissed, her voice dripping with venomous malice, "or starve again."
