Chapter 4

The hidden room had not been prepared three weeks ago.

That was the next problem.

Mrs. Bennett showed me old maintenance records from memory, not paper.

She had worked at the estate forty years.

“That cot?”

She pointed.

“It has been there at least six months.”

I looked at Evelyn.

She said nothing.

Lorenzo did.

“I wasn’t the first person kept there.”

Silence.

I stared.

“Who?”

“People Graham wanted out of sight during events.”

Graham laughed.

“Employees who needed discretion.”

Mrs. Bennett’s face tightened.

I noticed.

“Explain.”

She looked at me.

“Two former staff members.”

“What happened?”

“They were held overnight after hearing council conversations.”

My jaw clenched.

“Held.”

Evelyn cut in.

“They were paid afterward.”

I turned slowly.

“That makes it better?”

No answer.

The room was not just a hiding place.

It was a pressure room.

No chains.

No dungeon.

Something more respectable.

Lock the door.

Wait.

Threaten jobs.

Threaten families.

Make silence feel voluntary.

I looked at Mrs. Bennett.

“Why did you have the key?”

Her hands trembled.

“Because I clean everywhere.”

Of course.

Nobody notices caretakers.

She continued.

“When Mr. Lorenzo appeared three weeks ago, Graham told me he was an unstable trespasser.”

I looked at Graham.

He shrugged.

“He arrived after midnight claiming to be a dead man.”

Fair enough.

For ten seconds.

“What did you do?”

Mrs. Bennett swallowed.

“I brought him food.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

Grateful.

Then:

“She listened.”

That mattered.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Mrs. Bennett’s eyes filled.

“Evelyn said Lucas would lose his father if I did.”

My breathing slowed.

There it was.

Same threat.

Different generation.

“What exactly?”

Mrs. Bennett whispered:

“She said Lorenzo’s return would start a war, and if I loved Lucas, I would let you remain alive and ignorant.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“You used my son before he ever heard the voice.”

She stared.

“I was preventing chaos.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You were deciding which truth my family was allowed to survive.”

Then Lorenzo said:

“That is exactly what her father used to say.”

Evelyn went still.

Pattern.

May you like

Again.

Old fear wearing a new face.
