Chapter 12

Evelyn’s apology came too early.
I rejected it.
She stared.
“I said I’m sorry.”
“You explained yourself for twenty minutes and attached sorry at the end.”
Her face hardened.
“That is not fair.”
“Correct.”
I leaned back.
“Fair would be Lucas never entering that chair.”
Silence.
She tried again.
“I panicked.”
“About what?”
“Everything collapsing.”
“Because my father returned?”
“Yes.”
“Because Graham’s elder plan might fail?”
“Yes.”
“Because you feared losing branch influence?”
Her jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
Good.
“Which of those required hurting Lucas?”
Nothing.
There.
The center.
Adults love complicated motives because complexity makes accountability feel negotiable.
Strip it down.
Three-year-old.
Rotating chair.
Threat.
No political theory survives.
Evelyn whispered:
“I thought if he became scared enough, he would stop talking.”
“I know.”
Her eyes filled.
That was not absolution.
It was acknowledgment.
“You cannot see him.”
“For how long?”
“I don’t know.”
Her face changed.
“You’re using him to punish me.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I’m removing you because he is afraid of you.”
Different.
Important.
“What about family events?”
“No.”
“My home?”
“Yours.”
“Graham?”
“No estate role.”
She stared.
“You’re destroying us.”
No.
That word belonged elsewhere.
“You built influence around access to my house.”
Silence.
“I’m removing access.”
Graham lost his associate role entirely.
He still had independent business.
A life.
No need to ruin him.
Just no Vercetti authority.
Mrs. Bennett approved.
She did not say so.
Her smile did.
Then I asked Evelyn one thing.
“What would you have done if Lucas told me before today?”
She looked away.
I waited.
Finally:
“Called him confused.”
“Then?”
“Made sure you thought Mrs. Bennett encouraged it.”
There.
Another layer.
She planned to discredit the child by blaming the caretaker.
Classic.
Use status against truth.
I looked toward the hall.
Mrs. Bennett had been protecting this family longer than Evelyn had been alive.
Yet Evelyn assumed I would believe blood first.

The worst part?
