Chapter 16

Lorenzo became Grandpa eleven months after the wall opened.
Not through ceremony.
Not because I approved a title.
Lucas decided.
We were eating breakfast.
My father complained that the coffee was weak.
Mrs. Bennett told him to make his own.
Normal.
Lucas looked up.
“Grandpa?”
Lorenzo froze.
So did I.
Lucas continued:
“Pass syrup.”
That was it.
My father passed syrup with shaking hands.
I looked away.
Some moments deserve privacy even when everyone is sitting at the same table.
Later, Lorenzo found me outside.
“You heard?”
“No.”
He stared.
I almost smiled.
“Of course I heard.”
His eyes filled.
“Thank you.”
I looked at him.
“For what?”
“For letting him decide.”
That mattered.
“You’re welcome.”
Then I added:
“Don’t disappear.”
He laughed through tears.
“I know.”
He had kept the house nearby.
Cooked badly.
Attended appointments.
Showed up late twice.
Apologized.
Ordinary failures.
Good.
Ordinary was what I needed from him.
Not ghostly wisdom.
Not secret protection.
Presence.
One afternoon he showed Lucas the real cracked signet ring.
“This was Daddy’s?”
Lucas asked.
“Before your daddy.”
“Why crack?”
Lorenzo looked at me.
I sighed.
“I dropped it.”
Lucas burst out laughing.
Apparently discovering I had once been clumsy improved his day enormously.
Then he asked:
“Did Grandpa punish?”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
I stared.
“You absolutely punished me.”
He frowned.
“For dropping it?”
“Yes.”
“What did I do?”
“Made me polish every ring in the family collection.”
He smiled.
“That’s not punishment.”
“It took four hours.”
Lucas laughed harder.
There.
Family memory without fear.

Even old mistakes could become stories instead of weapons.
That felt new.
