Chapter 15

Evelyn wrote Lucas a letter after eight months.

One page.

I read it first because he was three.

It said:

Lucas,

I hurt you because I was afraid of what you knew.

That was wrong.

You did nothing wrong by telling your father.

Good.

Then:

I also threatened to take your father away from you. That was cruel and untrue.

Better.

No tradition.

No excuses.

No request for forgiveness.

Excellent.

I asked Lucas whether he wanted me to read it.

He was building a foam solar system on the floor.

“From who?”

“Evelyn.”

He froze.

Then looked at the rotating chair across the room.

“No.”

I folded the letter.

“Okay.”

That was it.

Two weeks later, he asked.

“Still have?”

“Yes.”

“Read little.”

So I read the first two lines.

He stopped me.

“Enough.”

Okay.

A month later, he asked for the whole thing.

At the end, he stared at a foam Saturn.

“She sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Can sorry make chair stop?”

I thought.

“The chair already stopped.”

“No.”

He frowned.

“Make memory stop.”

My throat tightened.

“No.”

Important truth.

“Then what sorry do?”

Hard question.

“It tells you she knows what she did was wrong.”

He thought.

“That’s all?”

“For now.”

He nodded.

Acceptable.

Adults often demand apologies perform miracles.

Children understand limited function.

Good.

He did not ask to see her.

We did not suggest it.

Evelyn continued living separately.

Graham left Vercetti work completely.

No revenge campaign.

No new villain plot.

Just consequences.

Sometimes that is more unsettling for people like them.

No battle to win.

Only a door that remains closed because of what they did.
