Chapter 4

The suffocating tension in the brilliantly lit ballroom escalated into a highly combustible, physical weight. Victoria Bellandi stood tall in her emerald gown, her fair face maintaining a mask of stubborn arrogance, entirely oblivious to the apocalyptic wrath she had just awakened.
Before Lorenzo could respond to his aunt’s psychotic justification, heavy footsteps approached from the right. Marcus Bellandi, Victoria’s forty-year-old son and a high-ranking Mafia capo, stepped into the clearing. Marcus wore an expensive, flawlessly tailored suit, a shiny capo pin resting on his lapel, and a luxury wristwatch that caught the cinematic sunlight. His fair, rosy face was set in a hard, uncompromising scowl, reflecting his mother’s deep-seated resentment toward Lorenzo’s leadership.
Marcus stopped beside his mother, his chest puffed out in a display of aggressive, masculine bravado. He looked at the broken wall panel, the crying child, and the black pet collar resting on the marble floor.
"My mother is right, Lorenzo," Marcus declared, his American accent loud and combative. "You are making a massive scene over nothing. We have the heads of three different syndicates in this room, and you are treating them like a sideshow."
"Step back, Marcus," Lorenzo warned softly, his voice a low, lethal hum that vibrated through the floorboards.
"No, I will not step back," Marcus shot back, his face flushing a dark, angry red. He took a bold, arrogant step forward. "This is our family’s welcome party. We are supposed to project strength, not coddle crying babies. Give the girl to the nanny and get back to your guests."
To demonstrate his supposed authority, Marcus reached out aggressively. He extended his hand, aiming directly for Isabella, intending to physically pull the child away from Lorenzo and grab the pet collar from the floor to hide the evidence of their cruelty.
Lorenzo moved with blinding, fluid speed.
He smoothly shifted his body, pivoting on his polished leather shoes. With absolute care and precision, he handed Isabella safely backward into the waiting arms of two massive, heavily armed bodyguards.
"Keep her out of sight. Do not let anyone approach her," Lorenzo ordered his men quietly.
The bodyguards immediately shielded the sobbing three-year-old, forming an impenetrable wall of dark suits between Isabella and the rest of the room.
Freed of his daughter, Lorenzo turned his full, terrifying attention back to his cousin.
"Stop embarrassing the family over one brat," Marcus sneered coldly, dropping his hand and standing squarely in front of the Mafia boss. He believed his status as a capo and his bloodline made him untouchable.
"You believe," Lorenzo whispered, his cold, sharp eyes narrowing into lethal slits, "that my daughter... is an embarrassment."

"I believe you are soft, Lorenzo," Marcus spat, crossing his arms over his tailored suit. "And soft men do not last long in this business."
Lorenzo did not argue. He did not issue a secondary warning. The measured, cold, and dangerous diplomacy had officially ended.
