Chapter 3

The bright, natural cinematic lighting of the ballroom offered no shadows to hide the horrific reality of what had just been exposed. Lorenzo Bellandi knelt on the polished marble floor, his tailored dark three-piece suit gathering dust. His massive, powerful hands moved with heartbreaking gentleness. He reached up, his fingers sliding under the heavy black pet collar fastened around his three-year-old daughter's neck. With a sharp, violent tug, he snapped the heavy leather strap, instantly removing the degrading collar and dropping it onto the floor.

"I have you, my beautiful girl," Lorenzo murmured, his voice a thick, low rumble of absolute, protective love. "You are safe. I have you."

He lifted Isabella effortlessly into his arms, standing up to his full, imposing height. He tucked her tiny, shivering body against his broad chest, shielding her torn, filthy clothes from the staring eyes of the crowd.

The heavy silence in the ballroom was suddenly broken by the rhythmic clicking of high heels.

Victoria Bellandi, Lorenzo’s sixty-three-year-old aunt and the senior matriarch of the Mafia family, walked gracefully through the parted sea of guests. She was a vision of old-world aristocratic arrogance. She wore a luxurious, sweeping emerald formal gown, heavy layers of pristine pearl jewelry, thick diamond rings, and sharp heels. Her fair, rosy skin was heavily powdered, and her expression was one of complete, entitled amusement.

She walked over to the destroyed wall panel, completely unfazed by the terrifying, homicidal aura radiating from her nephew. The wealthy American guests stared in absolute, breathless horror, but Victoria simply offered a cold, condescending smile.

"Oh, Lorenzo, darling, you always were so incredibly dramatic," Victoria laughed, her crisp American accent ringing out over the quiet room. She pointed a manicured, pearl-ringed finger mockingly at Isabella’s torn clothes.

"What is the meaning of this, Victoria?" Lorenzo asked. He spoke so slowly, his volume terrifyingly low, that the words felt like physical blows.

"It was a joke," Victoria stated, waving her hand dismissively as she looked at the terrified child. "She was running around causing a scene while the adults were preparing for the welcome party. I simply put her in a timeout to teach her some discipline. The collar was just a prop to remind her of her place. Children need structure, Lorenzo. You spoil her entirely too much."

"A joke," Lorenzo repeated, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. "You locked my three-year-old daughter... in a dark wall panel... with a dog collar around her neck."

"She is fine, Lorenzo," Victoria sighed, rolling her eyes as if dealing with an unruly subordinate. "Look at her, she is just putting on a performance to get your attention. If you want this family to respect you, you cannot let a toddler dictate your emotions in front of the capos."

Lorenzo did not yell. He did not blink. His cold, intimidating eyes locked onto his aunt, stripping away every layer of her aristocratic protection. The bright video colors of the party seemed to sharpen, acting as an unforgiving spotlight on the woman who had just signed her own death warrant.
