Chapter 8

"The comprehensive panel, Margaret," Claire said, leaning back in the motel desk chair, her eyes locked on the sleeping form of her daughter. "The genetic markers the hospital ran to check for Lily's blood anomaly. They required your side of the family's medical history, remember?"
"I am fully aware of the medical records I provided," Margaret snapped, though a slight tremor of uncertainty crept into her voice. "What is your point, Claire? Are you trying to blackmail me with some mundane medical issue?"
"There is nothing mundane about a zero percent maternal match," Claire stated, her words dropping like heavy stones over the cellular connection.
A profound, suffocating silence stretched across the line. Claire could hear the faint sound of Margaret’s ragged breathing on the other end.
"Daniel is not a Whitmore," Claire continued, twisting the knife with absolute precision. "He has no genetic link to the bloodline you parade around this city. You spent five years torturing a five-year-old girl because you were projecting your own filthy, cheating secrets onto me."
"You... you are lying," Margaret whispered, the aristocratic arrogance completely shattered, replaced by raw, unadulterated terror. "Those tests are flawed. They are inaccurate."
"They were run by the top geneticists at Boston General," Claire replied coldly. "And I have the certified originals right here in my hand. If you send a single lawyer after me, if you try to freeze my accounts, or if you ever come within a hundred miles of my daughter again, I will send copies of this page to every news outlet, society page, and board member associated with the Whitmore enterprise."
"Claire, listen to me," Margaret pleaded, her voice cracking in a way Claire had never heard before. "If this gets out, it will destroy the family. Mark’s position on the board, the trust funds... everything is tied to the legitimate bloodline. You would ruin Daniel!"
"Daniel is a coward who watched you chain his daughter to a post," Claire said, feeling no pity for her husband. "I don't care if his trust fund burns to the ground. This is my terms, Margaret. You are going to deposit five million dollars into an offshore account in my name by noon tomorrow. You are going to sign a document granting me full, uncontested sole custody of Lily. And you are going to tell Daniel that you were wrong."
"Five million?" Margaret gasped. "That is extortion!"
"No, Margaret. It is severance pay for five years of psychological abuse," Claire corrected her sharply. "If the money isn't there, the entire city finds out that the great Margaret Whitmore passed off another man's child as the heir to the empire."
Claire didn't wait for a response. She ended the call, tossed the phone onto the desk, and let out a long, shaky exhale.
She had just declared war on one of the most powerful families in the state, using their own dark secret as a shield. She looked at Lily, sleeping peacefully, the faint daisy patterns of her dress visible under the coat.

"I am going to give you the world, baby," Claire whispered.
But as Claire stood up to double-check the lock on the motel door, the glare of headlights swept across the thin curtains of the window. A vehicle had just pulled into the parking lot, stopping directly outside her room.
