Chapter 2

The words hung in the crisp evening air, freezing the blood in Claire’s veins. The sheer malice required to chain a child outside a house full of people was beyond anything Claire could have ever imagined. She pulled Lily into her arms, pressing the trembling child against her knit sweater, shielding her from the cold.
As she held her daughter, the heavy glass patio door suddenly slid open. The warm, loud noise of the party spilled out onto the terrace.
Margaret Whitmore stepped out into the evening air. She moved confidently, her posture impeccably straight. At sixty-one years old, Margaret was a vision of wealthy American aristocracy, wearing a tailored blazer, a crisp silk blouse, expensive trousers, pearl earrings, and sensible but sharp heels. Her fair, rosy skin was flawless, her expression completely devoid of any warmth or empathy.
Margaret stopped a few feet away. She looked directly at Lily, who flinched and buried her face in Claire’s neck, and then looked down at Claire with absolutely no remorse at all.
"I see you finally decided to show up," Margaret said, her tone dripping with aristocratic condescension.
Claire slowly stood up, placing Lily safely behind her legs. The protective fury building inside Claire’s chest was absolute and blinding. "You chained my daughter to a post. You chained a five-year-old child outside in the cold."
"I secured her," Margaret corrected coldly, adjusting one of her pearl earrings. "She was trying to sneak into the kitchen to eat with the rest of the children. I could not allow that."
"She is your granddaughter!" Claire screamed, the volume of her voice finally cracking the polite atmosphere of the party. Several guests inside turned toward the glass doors, their casual birthday-party clothing shifting as they noticed the confrontation.
"She is a mistake," Margaret replied. Her voice was cold, cruel, and entirely deliberate. "This party is not for cheaters’ kids. My son Daniel might be too weak to see the truth of your little affairs, Claire, but I am not. I will not have that bastard child tainting a Whitmore family celebration."
The absolute audacity of the lie snapped the last remaining shred of Claire’s restraint.
Claire lunged forward. She didn't argue. She didn't try to reason with a monster. She raised her hand and slapped Margaret across the face with every ounce of strength she possessed in her body.
The sound of the impact echoed like a gunshot across the stone patio. Margaret’s head snapped to the side, her expensive heels twisting beneath her. She collapsed hard onto the concrete floor, a shocked, breathless gasp escaping her lips.
Inside the house, the music abruptly stopped. The party guests froze in utter horror.
Claire stood over her mother-in-law, her chest heaving, looking down at Margaret lying on the floor. Her anger was no longer explosive; it was deeply controlled, focused, and terrifying.

"Look at these test results," Claire hissed, her voice vibrating with lethal intensity. "And don't ever regret it!"
Claire ripped open the zipper of her leather bag. She reached inside, pulled out a thick envelope containing official DNA test results, and threw them violently toward Margaret as she lay on the floor.
