Chapter 10

Claire stared at Jessica through the narrow gap in the door, her mind warring between deep suspicion and desperate curiosity. The heavy brass lamp still felt comforting in her grip, but the intense, unmasked sincerity in Jessica’s eyes made Claire hesitate.

"How do you know about the second page?" Claire asked, her voice a low, demanding whisper.

"Because I'm the one who switched the medical samples before they went to the lab in Boston," Jessica confessed, stepping closer to the crack in the door. "Claire, please. Daniel is already looking for you. If he figures out the GPS tracker, he will be here in twenty minutes with his mother's lawyers. Let me in."

Claire unlatched the chain and pulled the door open, stepping back to allow the other woman inside.

Jessica moved quickly, closing and locking the door behind her. She took off her trench coat, revealing the elegant party dress she had worn earlier that evening. She looked at Lily sleeping on the bed, a profound sadness flashing across her rosy face.

"I am so sorry I didn't stop Margaret today," Jessica said, her voice shaking slightly. "I wanted to. God, I wanted to tear that chain off her myself. But if I had broken my cover, Margaret would have destroyed me before I could finish what I started."

"What cover?" Claire demanded, setting the lamp down but keeping her distance. "You switched the DNA samples? Why? To protect me?"

"To expose her," Jessica said, turning to face Claire. "You think you're the only one who has suffered in that house, Claire? I have been married to Mark for ten years. Ten years of Margaret controlling every aspect of our lives, treating us like breeding stock to secure her legacy."

Jessica walked over to the desk, pointing to Claire's leather bag. "I knew Margaret was trying to frame you for an affair. I knew she was whispering in Daniel's ear to get rid of Lily. But I also knew Margaret's darkest secret. Mark told me years ago, in a drunken stupor. Daniel is his half-brother. Margaret had an affair with the family driver thirty-seven years ago."

Claire felt the room spin slightly. "So you used Lily's hospital test to prove it."

"I made sure the hospital had Margaret's actual bloodline profile to compare it to," Jessica nodded, a sharp, vindictive smile touching her lips. "I wanted you to find it. I knew that if anyone had the strength to use that information to blow the Whitmore family to pieces, it was you, Claire."

"Why didn't you just release it yourself?" Claire asked, still struggling to trust the woman.

"Because I signed an ironclad prenuptial agreement," Jessica said bitterly. "If I initiate a divorce or a scandal, I walk away with nothing, and Margaret keeps custody of my two boys. But you... you have leverage now. You can demand the money, and you can demand your freedom."

"I already did," Claire said, crossing her arms. "I demanded five million and sole custody. She has until noon tomorrow."

Jessica shook her head slowly, her expression turning incredibly grim. "Five million is a rounding error to her, Claire. She will pay it, and then she will use her remaining hundreds of millions to hunt you down and bury you. She will never let you live in peace knowing you hold that secret."

"Then what do we do?" Claire asked, the cold reality of Margaret's power settling heavily over her.

"We don't just take her money," Jessica said, reaching into the pocket of her trench coat and pulling out a thick, black flash drive. "We take her empire."

Before Jessica could explain what was on the drive, the silence of the motel room was shattered.

The heavy, unmistakable roar of multiple high-powered engines echoed outside. Bright, flashing police lights painted the thin curtains in violent strokes of red and blue.

A loud, aggressive pounding hit the motel door, shaking the frame.

"Claire Whitmore! Open the door!" a deep male voice shouted from outside. "We have a warrant for your arrest for the kidnapping of a minor!"

Claire looked at Jessica, terror finally breaking through her resolve. Margaret hadn't waited until noon. She had struck first.
