Chapter 7

The silence of the motel room was absolute, save for the soft hum of the heating unit. Claire stared at the second page of the medical documents, her mind struggling to process the scientific data laid out in stark, black-and-white ink.

The comprehensive genetic test hadn't just compared Lily's DNA to Daniel's. Because of Lily's rare blood anomaly, the doctors at Boston General had required a broader comparison of the Whitmore family's medical history to check for hereditary markers. Claire had provided Daniel's medical files, and Margaret had proudly supplied the genetic history of the entire Whitmore bloodline to "prove" the anomaly didn't come from her side.

Claire traced her finger down the column of genetic markers.

Lily’s DNA was a 99.999% match to Daniel as her biological father. That was the first page.

But the second page detailed Daniel's comparison to the Whitmore ancestral markers Margaret had provided.

Subject B (Daniel Whitmore) shows a 0.00% correlation to the provided maternal genetic lineage.

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She read the line again, and then a third time, making sure she wasn't misinterpreting the medical jargon.

It meant Daniel was not related to the Whitmore family tree Margaret had provided.

It meant Margaret Whitmore, the aristocratic, cruel matriarch who obsessed over bloodlines and purity, was not Daniel's biological mother. Or, more likely, Daniel was the product of an affair Margaret had desperately kept hidden for thirty-seven years.

"Oh my god," Claire whispered, the sheer magnitude of the discovery sending a shockwave through her system.

Margaret’s vicious hatred for Lily suddenly made complete, horrifying sense. It wasn't just that she suspected Claire of cheating; it was projection. Margaret saw her own dark secret reflected in the rumors she created. She abused Lily because every time she looked at the child, she was terrified her own history of infidelity would be exposed.

Claire’s cell phone buzzed on the desk, vibrating violently against the wood. It wasn't Daniel this time. The caller ID displayed an unknown, restricted number.

Claire knew exactly who it was. She swiped the screen and brought the phone to her ear.

"You think you have won, Claire," Margaret’s voice hissed through the speaker, devoid of her usual refined tone. She sounded desperate, venomous, and cornered. "But you have no idea the resources I possess. By tomorrow morning, your bank accounts will be frozen, your car will be reported stolen, and I will have a warrant out for your arrest."

"Is that right, Margaret?" Claire asked, her voice steady, fortified by the nuclear weapon she now held in her hand.

"I will take that child from you, and you will never see her again," Margaret threatened. "You should have left the papers on the patio and walked away quietly."

May you like

"You only read the first page, Margaret," Claire said, a cold, lethal confidence settling into her bones.

The line went silent for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about?"
