Chapter 1

The late afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the pristine driveway of the Whitmore estate, illuminating the bright, vivid colors of the autumn leaves. Claire hurried toward the backyard, her heels clicking sharply against the pavement. She was dressed in a fitted knit sweater and tailored jeans, her leather bag slung securely over her shoulder. She had been delayed at work, but she was eager to see her five-year-old daughter, Lily, who was supposed to be enjoying her cousin’s birthday party. The sounds of casual birthday-party clothing rustling, children laughing, and adults chatting warmly drifted from the large glass windows of the main house.

But as Claire rounded the corner of the stone patio, the warm, rosy complexion of her face instantly drained to a deathly pale white. The breath was violently knocked from her lungs.

There, sitting on the cold concrete beside the porch, was Lily. The little girl was wearing the beautiful dress with tiny daisies along the hem that Claire had bought her, paired with a soft cardigan, white socks, and little dress shoes. But her tiny ankle was wrapped in a heavy, abrasive metal chain. The other end of the chain was padlocked to a thick wooden support post.

Claire stopped dead in her tracks, her mind completely fracturing as she stared at her own flesh and blood tethered like an animal. Through the expansive glass doors, the party guests—men, women, and children with fair, rosy skin—were oblivious, eating cake and celebrating in bright, cinematic lighting.

Lily looked up, hearing the sharp click of her mother’s heels. The little girl’s fair face was stained with dried tears, her rosy cheeks flushed from the chill. She tried to force a brave, small smile, even though fresh tears were rapidly welling up in her bright eyes.

"Mommy…" Lily said, her small, trembling voice barely carrying over the sound of the party music inside.

Claire didn't scream. The sheer, unadulterated horror of the sight paralyzed her vocal cords, transforming her shock into an icy, protective adrenaline. She sprinted across the patio, dropping to her knees so hard they bruised against the stone.

"Oh my god. Oh my god, Lily," Claire breathed, her hands shaking violently as she reached for the heavy metal chain wrapping her daughter's ankle. It wasn't locked tightly, just hooked through a heavy carabiner, but it was heavy enough to keep a five-year-old completely trapped.

Claire tore the metal away, her manicured fingers scraping against the steel. She realized, feeling the freezing temperature of Lily’s small hands, that the little girl had been left outside for hours. Lily tried to hold back her tears, looking down at her dress shoes, looking deeply, heartbreakingly ashamed.

"Why are you out here by yourself?" Claire asked, her voice soft, horrified, and trembling with a rising, uncontrollable fury. "Who did this to you, baby?"

Lily looked down at the concrete. Through the glass behind them, a group of children laughed loudly as a balloon popped. Claire’s face hardened into stone as she watched her daughter struggle to answer.

"Grandma said I wasn’t allowed inside," Lily answered, her voice hurt and reduced to a terrified whispering. "She said I would ruin the party for the real family."
