Chapter 3

The heavy envelope struck Margaret’s blazer and spilled its contents onto the cold stone patio. Crisp, white medical documents fluttered slightly in the autumn breeze. Margaret remained on the floor, clutching her reddened, rosy cheek, staring up at Claire with a mixture of absolute shock and rising venom.

The patio doors flew wide open. Daniel Whitmore, Claire’s thirty-seven-year-old husband, rushed out onto the terrace, followed closely by his older brother, Mark. Daniel looked entirely out of place in the violence of the scene, wearing a neat button-up shirt and pressed slacks, his fair skin pale with panic.

"Mom!" Daniel yelled, dropping to his knees beside Margaret to help her sit up. He looked up at Claire, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Claire, what the hell is wrong with you? Why did you hit my mother?"

"Your mother chained our daughter to a wooden post!" Claire screamed, pointing a shaking finger at the heavy metal links still resting on the concrete. "She left Lily outside for three hours, Daniel! And where were you? Eating cake? Drinking wine while your child froze?"

Daniel’s gaze dropped to the metal chain, then shifted to Lily, who was sobbing quietly into Claire’s leg. The rosy color drained completely from his face, replaced by a pathetic, cowardly realization.

"I... I didn't know," Daniel stammered, raising his hands defensively. "Mom told me Lily was feeling sick and you came early to pick her up. I swear, Claire, I thought she was at home with you!"

"You didn't even check?" Claire demanded, tears of sheer frustration burning her eyes. "You just took her word for it?"

Mark, wearing a casual button-up shirt and trousers, stepped forward, attempting to project a masculine authority he didn't possess. "Claire, calm down. This is a misunderstanding. Mom was just trying to manage a stressful party."

"Manage a party?" Claire barked a humorless, terrifying laugh. "She called my daughter a cheater's kid. She told her she wasn't part of this family."

Margaret, leaning heavily on Daniel's arm, reached out with a trembling hand and picked up the scattered medical papers from the floor. She scanned the first page, her eyes narrowing in defiance.

"You can forge whatever papers you want, Claire," Margaret spat, her voice raspy. "We all know you were seeing that architect when Lily was conceived. The timeline doesn't match Daniel's travel schedule."

"Read the damn paper, Margaret," Claire commanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "It's not just a standard paternity test. It's a full genomic sequence ordered by Boston General Hospital. Read the probability of paternity."

Margaret’s eyes darted down the page. The silence on the patio was deafening. The guests inside pressed their faces against the glass, watching the matriarch of the family read the destruction of her own lies.

"Probability of Paternity: 99.999%," Margaret whispered aloud, her voice devoid of its former cruel confidence. The paper shook in her hands.

"She is your blood," Claire said, looking down at Daniel, her heart breaking at the sight of her weak husband. "She is your daughter, Daniel. And you let them treat her like a stray dog."
