Chapter 6

Ryan stood perfectly still amidst the scattered blankets, shattered ceramics, and broken wooden hangers. The bright, cinematic video colors of the hallway seemed to sharpen, throwing every detail of the absolute destruction into stark relief.

He looked down at the tiny silver hospital bracelet resting in his large, tattooed palm. Ava Carter. He traced the engraved letters with his thumb.

Slowly, Ryan shifted his cold, sharp gaze from the bracelet to the terrified six-year-old child. Ava was sitting on the floor, gripping three-year-old Lily’s hand tightly as if it were her only lifeline. The resemblance between the two girls, and to Ryan himself, was undeniable.

Finally, Ryan turned his intimidating eyes toward the dark, narrow service cavity exposed behind the loosened wall panel. In the shadows, he could clearly see folded, dirty blankets, crumpled food wrappers, and half-empty plastic water bottles hidden away. It was a prison cell built inside the walls of his own estate.

Ryan looked back down at Mara, who was weeping quietly among the fallen utility shelving, and then over to Marco, who was groaning as he spit blood onto the floorboards.

"Now," Ryan said. His voice was dead calm. He spoke slowly, the controlled pauses stretching the tension until it felt like a physical weight pressing against the chests of everyone in the corridor. "Tell me. Why my daughter. Was living inside my wall."

Mara and Marco exchanged a terrified, desperate glance. They were trapped.

"Ryan, please," Mara whimpered, her American accent trembling as she pushed a fallen ceramic jar away from her legs. "You have to understand. When she was born... you were away in Chicago. The family was under investigation. We had to protect the bloodline."

"By locking her. In the dark?" Ryan asked, his volume incredibly low.

"She wasn't supposed to survive the birth!" Marco spat, clutching his shattered jaw as he pushed himself up onto his elbows. "Your first wife died delivering her! The doctors said the kid had a congenital heart defect. They said she wouldn't live a month!"

Ryan’s eyes darkened into a freezing, lethal void. His first wife, Sarah, had died tragically six years ago. He had been told the child had died with her. He had buried an empty, closed casket because they told him the remains were too small, too fragile to be viewed.

"You told me. She was dead," Ryan whispered, the sheer, apocalyptic rage radiating from his masculine frame making the nearby bodyguards take a step backward.

"If she lived, she was a liability!" Marco shouted defensively, blood staining his teeth. "She was a sickly infant! The rival families would have seen her as a weakness to exploit! Mara and I made a strategic decision to hide her to protect the strength of the Carter organization!"

"You made a decision. To torture my blood," Ryan stated coldly.

"I kept her alive!" Mara shrieked, pointing a shaking, manicured finger at the dark cavity. "I fed her! I kept her hidden from the world! If the other bosses knew you had a weak, hidden heir, they would have slaughtered us all! I did it for you, Ryan! I did it for our future!"

"Your future," Ryan said softly, "ended the moment you put her behind that wall."
