Chapter 3

The sound of the shattering ceramic plate echoed like a gunshot through the sprawling estate. Just down the corridor, the heavy mahogany doors of the master office swung open.

Ryan Carter unexpectedly walked out into the bright, cinematic light of the hallway. At thirty years old, Ryan was the absolute head of the Carter organization. He was as handsome as a movie star, radiating a powerful, deeply masculine, and incredibly intimidating presence that defined him as a ruthless Mafia boss. He wore dark, tailored trousers and an open-collar white dress shirt that revealed glimpses of the dark, artistic tattoos creeping up his neck and wrapping around his arms. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his finger, matching his luxury wristwatch and polished leather shoes.

He took three long strides into the hallway and stopped cold.

The scene before him was absolute chaos. Lily was on the floor, crying hysterically, surrounded by shattered ceramic. Mara was leaning against the wall, her arm shoved violently inside a loosened access panel.

"Mara," Ryan said. He spoke slowly, with controlled, agonizing pauses between his words. His volume was incredibly low, yet the sheer force of his authority paralyzed the room. "Step away from the wall."

Mara froze, her fair skin turning the color of ash. She slowly pulled her arm out of the cavity, refusing to meet his cold, sharp, intimidating eyes.

From the suffocating darkness of the narrow service cavity, a small, trembling figure emerged. Ava slowly crawled out into the bright light of the hallway. She looked frail in her oversized gray sweatshirt and pajama trousers, her bare feet stepping carefully to avoid the broken ceramic. She clutched her tattered stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Ryan stared at the six-year-old girl. His jawline tightened, the muscles flexing beneath his fair, rosy skin. He had never seen this child before in his life.

Ava looked directly at Ryan. Her blue eyes, so strikingly similar to his own, were filled with a mixture of terror and desperate hope. She took a slow, trembling step toward him, completely ignoring Mara.

She reached up, her tiny, shaking hand lifting into the air. She gently touched Ryan’s face, her fingers grazing his sharply defined jawline.

"Daddy…" Ava said weakly, her voice breaking.

Ryan became completely still. It was the absolute, terrifying stillness of an apex predator processing a catastrophic shift in its reality. His cold eyes locked onto the little girl, his mind racing through a thousand impossible calculations.

Sensing the impending destruction of her six-year lie, Mara panicked. She immediately lunged forward, grabbing Ava’s thin arm, desperately trying to pull her away from Ryan and shove her back toward the wall.

"She is just a confused stray!" Mara shouted frantically. "Emily must have let her in!"

Ryan’s reaction was explosive. He tore Mara’s hand free from the child with a brutal, effortless flick of his wrist.

"Do not. Touch her," Ryan whispered, the cold danger in his voice dropping the temperature in the hallway to absolute zero.

Before Ryan could interrogate his wife, heavy footsteps pounded down the corridor.
