Chapter 1

The natural, cinematic lighting of the Carter estate’s west hallway was utterly flawless. There was no dull, yellow tint to the illumination; instead, a crisp, bright white radiance cascaded from the recessed ceiling fixtures, highlighting the rich mahogany floors and the pristine, cream-colored wainscoting. The vivid colors of the estate felt alive, breathing luxury and control. Emily Carter, the trusted household manager, walked softly down the corridor. At thirty-four, she possessed a quiet grace, wearing modest nighttime clothing, a soft beige cardigan, and sensible flats. Her fair, rosy skin glowed gently in the bright light, a stark contrast to the dark, heavy utility shelving that lined the far side of the hall.

"Lily, you really need to be in bed," Emily said gently, turning the corner.

Three-year-old Lily stood near the utility shelves, her rosy cheeks flushed with a mixture of excitement and nervous energy. She wore soft, light pink cotton pajamas and tiny, plush slippers. In her small hands, she carried a heavy ceramic plate stacked precariously high with four large turkey sandwiches.

"I can't sleep, Aunt Emily," Lily said, her American accent sweet and innocent, echoing lightly off the hardwood. "I needed a midnight snack."

Emily sighed, shaking her head with an affectionate smile. "A snack? Lily, that is enough food for a grown man. Let me take that back to the kitchen before you drop it."

"No!" Lily protested, pulling the plate close to her chest. "It's for me. I promise I will eat it all by myself."

"Your father will not be pleased if you make a mess on these floors," Emily warned softly, kneeling down to look the little girl in the eyes. "Ryan likes a perfectly tidy house. You know how strict he can be."

"Daddy is busy working in his office," Lily whispered, her bright eyes darting down the long, brilliantly lit hallway. "Please, Aunt Emily? Just this once?"

Emily smoothed a loose lock of hair from Lily’s forehead. "Alright. But go straight to your room. Do not let Mara catch you wandering around with food. She has been in a terrible, unpredictable mood all evening."

"I won't," Lily promised, offering a wide, innocent smile.

As Emily stood up and walked back toward the staff quarters, Lily waited until the hallway was completely empty. Her tiny heart hammered against her ribs. She didn't walk toward her bedroom. Instead, she crept toward a specific, loosened wall panel hidden discreetly behind a freestanding coat-and-linen rack.

Lily knelt down carefully on the polished floor, balancing the ceramic plate on her knees. She reached out and hooked her fingers around the edge of the wooden panel. It creaked slightly as she pulled it back, revealing a narrow, pitch-black service cavity hidden within the architecture of the house.

"Are you there?" Lily whispered into the suffocating darkness.

A faint rustling sound echoed from inside the wall, followed by the soft shifting of hidden blankets. "I'm here," a tiny, frightened voice replied.

"I brought you food," Lily murmured, sliding the plate closer to the gap.
