Chapter 18

"You’re completely bluffing," Jocelyn stated firmly, though her blood ran undeniably cold. She purposely kept her hands perfectly still at her sides. "I have advanced thermal optics mounted directly on my vehicles," Julian sneered arrogantly, casually gesturing toward the armored SUVs. "I can distinctly see seven heat signatures hiding in the catwalks. You brought basic private security to a highly classified military operation, Jocelyn. A truly fatal miscalculation." David violently struggled against his captors. "Jocelyn, run! Don't give them the drug! It’s a literal chemical lobotomy!" "Silence," a massive mercenary growled, brutally striking David in the ribs with the heavy butt of a rifle. David crumpled instantly to his knees with a sharp, agonizing groan. "Stop!" Jocelyn shouted, instinctively taking a desperate step forward. The mercenaries raised their automatic weapons instantly. "The amateur standoff ends right now," Julian said, calmly checking his expensive watch. "You completely bankrupted your family, evicted your parents, and utterly destroyed your sister to get to this exact point. Are you really going to let your husband die to save a warehouse full of chemicals?" "No," Jocelyn said, her voice unexpectedly dropping to a terrifyingly calm register. "I’m going to let him live." She reached slowly into her trench coat. The mercenaries noticeably tensed, their fingers tightening aggressively on their triggers. But Jocelyn didn't pull out a weapon. She pulled out the encrypted satellite phone. "I didn't actually rig the pallets with thermite, Julian," Jocelyn said, a cold, ruthless smile touching her lips. "I rigged the pallets with Katherine’s original pediatric formula. The highly unstable one that killed those innocent children in Ohio." Julian frowned deeply, genuine confusion finally flickering in his cold eyes. "What are you talking about?" "Marcus," Jocelyn boldly commanded into the phone. "Activate the primary ventilation system." Instantly, a deafening mechanical roar echoed through the warehouse as the massive industrial exhaust fans aggressively kicked on. "The vials on those pallets aren't the stabilized compliance drug," Jocelyn yelled over the deafening noise. "They are aerosolized neurotoxins!"
