Chapter 13

The underground safe house beneath Apex Global’s downtown corporate headquarters was practically a modern fortress. It featured reinforced concrete walls, biometric security locks, and operated entirely off the municipal grid to prevent tracking. Jocelyn paced the entire length of the brushed steel conference table while Marcus, her lead corporate attorney, organized highly classified digital files on the holographic display. Nathan stood stoically by the reinforced door, his arms crossed over his black tactical vest. "The vehicle plates were entirely fake," Nathan reported, pulling up a blurry traffic camera still on the monitor. "A complete ghost car. But we successfully ran facial recognition on the driver based on your detailed description." "Who is he?" Jocelyn asked, stopping her frantic pacing. "Julian Vance," Marcus answered, swiftly swiping a detailed dossier onto the main screen. "Former CIA covert operative. Now he runs global acquisitions for a shadowy private military contractor known as the Aegis Syndicate. They operate completely in the dark, mostly handling off-book logistical supply lines." "He specifically mentioned Katherine’s pharmaceutical supply lines," Jocelyn noted, her razor-sharp mind racing back to the confrontation. "He explicitly stated Katherine was becoming a liability to their operations." "We deeply analyzed the unredacted clinical data from the disastrous Ohio trials," Marcus said, adjusting his glasses nervously. "The drug Katherine was recklessly developing wasn't just highly toxic to pediatric patients. When administered to adult subjects in heavily controlled doses, it chemically suppresses the amygdala. It permanently eliminates fear and hyper-focuses absolute obedience." Jocelyn’s blood instantly turned to ice. "It’s a chemical compliance agent." "Exactly," Marcus nodded grimly. "Aegis wanted it to synthesize fearless operatives. Katherine wasn't just faking pediatric data to desperately save her vanity projects and fund sports cars. She was unwittingly funding a shadow war." "And Richard?" Jocelyn asked, her voice dropping lower. "Your father arrogantly thought he was dealing with standard shell companies when he leveraged his commercial debt," Nathan interjected coldly. "He was a spectacularly useful idiot."
