Chapter 3

The heavy, oak double doors of the grand ballroom swung open with a sudden, deafening crack that completely silenced the string quartet.
The vibrant, bright colors of the room seemed to momentarily dull as a towering figure stepped over the threshold. It was Roland Carter. At sixty years old, Roland was a man who possessed the raw, terrifying gravity of a veteran Mafia boss. He wore a flawless, tailored three-piece suit in deep navy, a pristine white dress shirt, and polished leather shoes that mirrored the marble floor. On his right hand rested a heavy, solid gold signet ring—a symbol of a bloodline that had controlled the city long before the Hayes family ever had a bank account.
Despite his age, Roland’s fair, rosy skin betrayed no frailty. His broad shoulders and fierce, unyielding posture radiated a deeply masculine, intimidating aura that instantly sucked the oxygen out of the room. The sea of wealthy, formal guests parted immediately, moving out of his path like water parting for a battleship.
Roland’s sharp, predatory eyes scanned the crowded ballroom. It took him less than three seconds to locate the center of the conflict. He saw Michael, his face twisted in a cold sneer, gripping Emily’s arm with brutal force. He saw the stained, wet dresses of his two tiny granddaughters, Megan and Olivia, who were sobbing uncontrollably by their mother’s side.
The temperature in the room plummeted. The polite murmurs of the American elite died in their throats.
"Michael," Roland’s voice boomed across the vast space. It was not a shout, but a deep, resonant growl that commanded absolute obedience.
Michael froze. The arrogant, untouchable smirk melted off his face in an instant, replaced by a flash of genuine, unadulterated panic. His grip on Emily’s arm slackened just a fraction.
Emily seized the opportunity. With a sudden, desperate surge of adrenaline, she wrenched her arm free from her husband’s grasp. She stumbled backward, immediately dropping to her knees to gather Megan and Olivia into her arms, pressing their tear-stained faces into the silk of her blue dress.
Roland closed the distance between the doorway and the buffet table in long, terrifying strides. The bodyguards stationed around the room—men loyal to the Hayes family—did not dare step in his way.
Emily looked up at her father. Her beautiful face was pale, her entire body shaking with a mixture of fear, relief, and suppressed rage.
"Dad…" Emily cried out, her voice echoing in the silent, brightly lit room. She pointed a trembling finger at Jessica and Michael. "They treat the girls like servants. She threw food on them."
Roland stopped three feet from Michael. The older man did not look at his daughter, nor did he look at the crying children. His eyes were locked entirely on Michael, burning with a lethal, quiet fury that promised absolute destruction.
"Is this true, Michael?" Roland asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Do you allow your mother to treat my blood like stray dogs?"
May you like
"Roland, please, it's a misunderstanding," Michael stammered, raising his hands defensively, his fair skin turning a sickly shade of white. "The girls were just getting in the way of the catering staff. We were just trying to maintain order."
"Order," Roland repeated, the word rolling off his tongue like poison.
