Chapter 10

The iron gates of the Carter family estate stood tall and unyielding, imposing barriers of black steel that separated Roland’s fortress from the rest of the world. The afternoon sun shone brightly, casting vivid, sharp shadows across the meticulously manicured lawns. Inside the sprawling compound, Emily sat on the veranda, watching Megan and Olivia play in the grass, their laughter a stark, beautiful contrast to the violence surrounding their family.

Roland stood beside his daughter, smoking a thick, imported cigar. His tailored three-piece suit was impeccable, his posture relaxed but ever-vigilant. He had received the call an hour ago. The Russians had paid their visit. Michael Hayes was alive, but only barely. They had beaten him mercilessly, stripping him of his watch, his wedding ring, and the deed to his company, leaving him broken on the floor of his own office.

But Roland knew a desperate man was a dangerous man.

A sleek, black SUV pulled up the long driveway, stopping just short of the main gate. The heavy engine idled loudly. Roland’s bodyguards immediately stepped out from the shadows, their hands resting on their holstered weapons, eyes locked on the vehicle.

The driver’s side door opened. Michael Hayes stepped out.

He was a horrifying sight, a grotesque shadow of the handsome, arrogant man from the birthday party. His tailored suit was torn and stained with dark blood. His fair face was severely bruised, one eye swollen completely shut, and he walked with a pronounced, agonizing limp. But in his trembling right hand, he held a thick, manila envelope.

Michael limped toward the iron gates, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps.

"Roland!" Michael shouted, his voice cracking, filled with a manic, cornered desperation. "Roland, come out here! I know you're watching!"

Roland took a slow drag from his cigar. He patted Emily’s shoulder reassuringly and walked down the grand stone steps, moving with the slow, inevitable grace of an apex predator. He stopped just on the other side of the iron bars, looking at the broken man through the steel grating.

"You look hungry, Michael," Roland said softly, his deep voice carrying clearly over the idling engine. "I told you, you wouldn't have leftovers."

"You think you won," Michael spat, blood dripping from his split lip onto his ruined white shirt. He held up the manila envelope, pressing it against the iron bars. "You think you can just take my wife and my daughters and leave me with nothing? I have contingencies, Roland. I have insurance."

Roland’s eyes narrowed slightly, though his posture remained completely relaxed. "Insurance?"

"Inside this envelope are the encrypted ledgers for the Carter syndicate's entire smuggling operation from the last five years," Michael laughed, a wet, unhinged sound. "Dates, times, account numbers, and the names of every judge on your payroll. I copied them from Emily’s private safe."

Roland did not flinch, but the air around him grew instantly colder.

"If I don't walk away from here with a guarantee of safety and ten million dollars," Michael threatened, his eyes wide and wild, "these files go directly to the FBI. I will pull your entire empire down into hell with me."

Roland looked at the envelope, then looked into the desperate, bloodshot eyes of his son-in-law. The old mafia boss slowly reached inside his tailored jacket, the bright sunlight catching the gold of his signet ring as the real war finally began.
