Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Hayes estate was a blinding spectacle of wealth and forced celebration. Brilliant crystal chandeliers cast a vivid, radiant light that bounced off the polished marble floors, illuminating a room filled with towering arrangements of bright, saturated floral displays. The colors of the room were striking—vivid crimson roses, bright gold accents, and the crisp, clean white of silk table linens. The guests, an assembly of white American elite deeply entrenched in the unspoken rules of mafia-family politics, wore their finest formal attire. Their fair, rosy skin glowed under the immaculate lighting, completely devoid of any dark shadows.

At the center of this opulent display was Emily Carter. At twenty-five, she possessed a breathtaking beauty that perfectly aligned with the highest American standards. She wore an elegant, sapphire-blue evening dress that hugged her slender frame, paired with expensive diamond earrings and a platinum wedding ring that felt heavier on her finger by the second. Despite the bright colors surrounding her, Emily’s heart was pounding with a dark, suffocating anxiety.

Her two young daughters, four-year-old Megan and three-year-old Olivia, were growing restless. Dressed in matching, pristine white party dresses and delicate little shoes, the girls had been politely waiting by the lavish buffet for nearly twenty minutes.

"Mommy, I'm hungry," Olivia whispered, her large blue eyes looking up at Emily. "Can we have the shrimp now?"

"Just a moment, sweetie," Emily said gently, her crisp American accent laced with strained patience. "Let Auntie finish serving the adults first."

Before Emily could reach for a small plate, her mother-in-law, Jessica Hayes, materialized beside the table. At sixty-three, Jessica was dressed in an excessively formal, jewel-toned outfit that matched her cold, aristocratic demeanor. Her fair skin was heavily powdered, and her wrists glittered with heavy gold bracelets. In her manicured hands, she held a massive, sterling silver platter piled high with jumbo shrimp and a rich, buttery broth.

Olivia instinctively reached a small hand toward the edge of the platter.

Jessica’s eyes narrowed into a vicious glare. With a sudden, aggressive jerk, she ripped the shrimp platter entirely out of the toddler’s reach.

"Don't touch that with your dirty hands!" Jessica hissed.

"They just wanted a piece of shrimp, Jessica," Emily said, her voice tightening as she stepped forward to shield her daughters. "There is more than enough food here."

"Not for them," Jessica sneered, her rosy cheeks flushing with spite. She grabbed a nearby bowl of cold, gelatinous leftovers and forcefully shoved it across the table toward the two little girls. The sudden, violent motion sent a wave of greasy, lukewarm broth splashing over the edge of the bowl.

The liquid splattered directly across the front of Megan’s and Olivia’s pristine party dresses, soaking into the delicate fabric. Both girls gasped in shock, their lower lips trembling as the cold broth soaked their skin.

"Girls cost this family enough," Jessica said, looking down her nose with absolute, unapologetic malice. "They eat leftovers."

Emily’s vision went red. The blatant cruelty, executed in the middle of a brightly lit ballroom, was a line that had never been crossed so publicly.

"How dare you speak to my children that way," Emily said, her voice shaking with rage as she grabbed a napkin to wipe the broth from Olivia’s dress. "You are a bitter, miserable woman."

"Watch your tone, Emily," Jessica snapped back, holding the shrimp platter tightly against her chest. "You are in my house. You will learn your place, and your useless daughters will learn theirs."
