Chapter 8

The close-up held on Caspian’s face. His cold, perceptive eyes remained on Mabel for one silent, agonizing beat. He absorbed the sheer trauma radiating from his daughter, the innocent child who had been forced to carry the crushing weight of a terrifying deception, manipulated by the very woman who was supposed to become her stepmother. The rigid lines of his angular face softened by a fraction of a millimeter toward the girl, a silent promise of absolute, uncompromising protection.
Then, his eyes slowly shifted.
His gaze moved across the gold-rimmed porcelain and crystal stemware, locking directly onto Amelia. The movement of his head followed slightly, a slow, predatory turn that sent a shockwave of terror through the room.
His jaw firmed, the muscles flexing visibly beneath his extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His mouth became completely still, settling into a firm, unyielding line.
He held Amelia’s eyes in cold, unwavering silence.
The end of the visual prompt suspended the room in this agonizing, freezing stare. The bright, luminous colors of the dining hall felt like a harsh interrogation spotlight, offering Amelia absolutely no place to hide.
"Are you calling my blood a liar in front of the entire commission?" Caspian finally asked, the volume of his voice dropping into a register of pure, concentrated ice.
"Caspian, please, you have to understand," Amelia stammered, her American accent trembling uncontrollably as she backed away from the table. "She was obsessed with that urn! It was unhealthy! She spent hours staring at it instead of bonding with me! I was only trying to help her let go!"
"Does helping a child let go require you to promise them a ghost in exchange for desecration?" Caspian inquired, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, unyielding authority.
"I didn't know what else to do!" Amelia cried, tears of panic and frustration finally spilling over her fair cheeks, ruining her pristine makeup. "She wouldn't accept me! I am your fiancée! I am the lady of this house! I had to assert my place in this family! You were letting the memory of a dead woman run this estate!"
"Do you believe your place in this family is secured by shattering the only physical remains of the woman I loved?" Caspian asked smoothly.
He didn't wait for her pathetic, scrambling answer. He took a slow, deliberate step toward the center of the table. The refined artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he rested his palms on the polished walnut wood.

"Did you truly believe you could psychologically torture my daughter, desecrate my wife's ashes, and seamlessly ascend to my side without consequence?" Caspian questioned, his voice echoing cleanly off the carved ivory-paneled walls.
Amelia opened her mouth, her breath catching audibly in the quiet room. She looked at the towering, deeply masculine Mafia boss, realizing that the formidable intellect she had so arrogantly underestimated had just trapped her perfectly. Every guest remained attentive, paralyzed by the public unmasking of the future bride.
