Chapter 4

The medium wide shot framed the immediate, terrifying shift in the room's atmosphere. The bright, airy colors of the dining hall felt suddenly charged with an explosive, high-voltage tension. The clean whites of the table linens and the polished highlights of the silver cutlery shimmered beneath the warm golden light, a stark contrast to the dark reality of the confrontation about to unfold.
Caspian did not rush, nor did he display any outward sign of explosive anger. He simply stepped sideways with a fluid, terrifying masculine grace. His broad, powerful shoulders shifted beneath the tailored dark three-piece suit. In one deliberate, protective motion, Caspian moved beside Mabel.
He reached out with his heavily tattooed hand. The refined artistic ink flexed smoothly as he rested a gentle, incredibly tender hand on his daughter’s small shoulder, grounding her in the massive, crowded room.
Then, Caspian slowly lifted his head. The loose strands of slightly wavy hair falling over his forehead cast no shadows in the bright, luminous room, but the sheer gravity of his presence seemed to darken the space immediately surrounding him. He shifted his cold, terrifyingly perceptive gaze away from the child and looked directly into Sylvia’s eyes.
The housemaid held his gaze, her heart plummeting into her stomach. She saw the deeply masculine, lethal power radiating from him, but beneath the cold exterior, she recognized a fierce, unyielding demand for the truth.
“Sylvia. Why is Mabel crying?”
Caspian’s voice stayed low, quiet, and impossibly deliberate. The question dropped into the silent, luminous room like a heavy stone into still water.
Every single guest at the massive, crowded tables stopped eating and speaking. The melodic hum of polite, American-accented conversations died completely. Men in expensive formal wear and women in satin gowns turned their heads in unison, their fair, rosy faces locking onto the head of the table. The silence was absolute, heavy with the terrifying realization that the apex predator of their world had just halted his own engagement dinner to interrogate a servant.
Sylvia froze. She swallowed hard, the muscles in her throat contracting visibly beneath the crisp white collar of her maid dress. She was entirely exposed beneath the bright, golden glow of the cascading chandeliers, trapped between the man who owned the city and the woman who was about to marry him.

Her inner brows lifted helplessly, an expression of profound vulnerability and quiet agony. She was terrified of Amelia, acutely aware of the vindictive cruelty the fiancée was capable of. But looking down at the heavy linen bundle in her hands, a fierce wave of protectiveness for the late wife's memory overrode her fear.
Before Sylvia could part her lips to speak the devastating truth, Amelia moved to intercept the narrative.
