Chapter 1

The evening dinner inside the Hale mansion was an opulent display of orchestrated power, bathed entirely in warm golden light. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the vaulted ceilings, their countless prisms fracturing the illumination and casting a soft, elegant radiance across the gilded ceiling moldings and ivory-paneled walls. At the far end of the expansive room, a massive, ornate marble fireplace stood as a monument to the family’s wealth. Tall ivory candles glowed steadily in heavy silver candelabras, positioned meticulously among sprawling centerpieces of pristine white roses. The polished walnut tables were lined with champagne velvet chairs, each occupied by the elite members of the local syndicate. Fine gold-rimmed porcelain and crystal stemware caught the soft reflected light, clearly illuminating the faces of the guests. Everyone in attendance was a white American, their fair, rosy skin glowing with health and untouchable privilege as their melodic American accents filled the air with polite, measured conversation.
At the head of the main table sat Caspian Hale. At forty-four, the Mafia boss possessed a movie-star-handsome masculinity that commanded the absolute submission of the room. He had broad, powerful shoulders that perfectly filled out his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face was defined by a high-bridged nose and a sharply defined jaw, shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes surveyed the dining hall with predatory stillness. Refined hand and finger tattoos, designed with generous spacing to maintain an air of dangerous elegance, peeked out from beneath his cuffs, matching a small, artistic neck tattoo visible above his collar. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his hand next to a luxury wristwatch.
Standing proudly beside his chair was his fiancée, Amelia Vance. At thirty-three, she was a sculpted vision in a champagne satin evening gown that clung flawlessly to her slender frame. Diamond earrings swung gently from her lobes, catching the chandelier light and matching the massive engagement ring on her left hand.
"The evening is progressing beautifully, wouldn't you agree?" Amelia murmured, leaning slightly toward Caspian, her American accent dripping with aristocratic charm. "Our guests seem entirely captivated by the ambiance."
Caspian slowly turned his signet ring, his cold gaze shifting from the crowded tables to her flawless face. His voice, when he spoke, was deep, low, and possessed a terrifying gravity.
"Do you believe the quality of the ambiance is sufficient to maintain the loyalty of these men, Amelia?"
It was a known, chilling quirk of the formidable boss; his dialogue consisted exclusively of questions. It was a psychological tactic that kept everyone around him perpetually off-balance, forced to constantly justify their own existence and words.

Amelia’s smile tightened for a fraction of a second before recovering its brilliant wattage. "Of course not, darling. But a flawless dinner certainly projects the strength and unity of our new life together. We are moving forward."
"Does moving forward require us to forget the foundations upon which this house was built?" Caspian inquired, his gaze drifting away from her. He looked toward the arched doorway leading to the small memorial alcove adjoining the dining gallery, sensing a sudden, heavy absence in the room.
