Chapter 7

The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Mabel.

The six-year-old girl, still gripping Sylvia’s white apron with one hand, stepped slightly forward. She looked past the dark, towering fabric of her father's tailored suit. She looked directly across the table at Amelia.

The fair, rosy skin of Mabel's cheeks was damp with continuous tears. She had been terribly confused, her innocent mind struggling to comprehend the cruel deception she had been subjected to. She had pushed the beautiful porcelain vase off the pedestal, fully expecting the magic she had been promised to unfold. She had waited in the quiet alcove, expecting her mother to step out from the ashes and hold her again.

Mabel looked directly at the woman in the sculpted satin evening gown. Her lower lip trembled violently. She still seemed to be waiting, with a heartbreaking, desperate hope, for the promise to come true.

“You said Mommy would come back.”

Mabel spoke the words quietly, but the crisp American accent carried them with absolute, devastating clarity. They echoed across the ivory-paneled walls and gilded mirrors, impossible to misinterpret.

The absolute, terrifying implication of the child's words crashed over the dining hall. Amelia had not just lied about an accident. She had actively, maliciously orchestrated the destruction of the late wife's remains by weaponizing the grief of a six-year-old child. She had manipulated an innocent girl into desecrating her own mother's grave with a psychotic, cruel lie.

The collective silence of the wealthy, powerful guests transformed into a suffocating vacuum. The level of calculated, psychopathic ambition required to execute such a deception sickened the men and women at the tables.

Amelia’s polite, reassuring smile disappeared instantly. The facade completely shattered.

Her eyes settled on Mabel for a fraction of a second, filled with a mixture of profound panic and vicious, unadulterated anger. Then, her gaze moved anxiously, frantically, back toward Caspian. She was desperately searching his face for any sign of mercy, any indication that he might forgive the ultimate betrayal.

"Caspian, she is lying!" Amelia shrieked, her voice pitching up into a hysterical, defensive frequency. She pointed a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the little girl. "She is a traumatized child! Her mind is combining memories! She doesn't know what she is saying!"

"Is it customary for a grieving child to invent the specific mechanics of resurrection to slander her father's fiancée?" Caspian asked.

His deep, low voice rolled through the quiet room, the measured pauses striking like the heavy toll of a funeral bell. He did not look at Amelia yet. He kept his cold, observant eyes locked on the weeping child standing by his side, absorbing the sheer magnitude of the psychological torture his daughter had endured.
