Chapter 2

The bright, natural sunlight of the garage seemed to mock the shivering child on the floor. Leo scrubbed desperately at the car door, his tears mixing with the soapy water. From the shadow of the interior doorway, Maria Sutton watched with a breaking heart.

At thirty years old, the estate maid knew the dangerous politics of the Bellucci household, but she could no longer stand by. Maria wore a crisp, professional black maid uniform, a pristine white apron, thick tights, and sensible flats. Her fair, rosy face was pale with anxiety as she stepped out into the cinematic light of the garage. In her hands, she carefully carried a small ceramic lunch plate holding a warm sandwich and some sliced fruit.

"Excuse me, Miss Helena," Maria said softly, her American accent trembling slightly as she approached the luxury vehicle.

Helena turned, her diamond earrings flashing. She looked the maid up and down with absolute disgust. "What do you want, Maria? I am busy instructing the boy."

"Ma'am, he has been out here for hours," Maria pleaded gently, stepping closer to the shivering toddler. "He is just a baby. I brought him a little bit of food. He needs to eat something."

"He will eat when the car is clean," Helena snapped, her voice rising in irritation.

"Just a few bites, please," Maria insisted, kneeling down beside Leo and offering the plate toward his small, dirty hands. "Here, sweetie. Take a bite."

Leo looked at the food, his bright blue eyes wide with desperate hunger, but he was too terrified of his aunt to reach for it.

"I gave you a direct order, you insolent girl!" Helena shrieked.

Before Maria could pull the plate back, Helena lunged forward. With a violent, sweeping motion of her manicured hand, Helena brutally knocked the plate directly out of Maria’s grasp.

The ceramic plate shattered against the polished concrete floor. The warm sandwich and fresh fruit scattered violently across the garage, sliding through the soapy puddles and completely ruined.

Maria gasped, falling back onto her hands.

Leo let out a heartbroken, breathless wail. The sight of the ruined food completely shattered his fragile endurance. He dropped the wet cleaning cloth, his small hands clutching his stomach as he sobbed uncontrollably into the bright, echoing space.

"Dad!" Leo cried out, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated misery. "Dad… I haven’t eaten since yesterday!"

Helena laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "Your father is busy running an empire, you pathetic little pest. He doesn't care about your stomach."
