Chapter 9

Two paramedics rushed into the kitchen, carrying a heavy trauma bag and a collapsible stretcher. The bright, cinematic light of the afternoon was now entirely overtaken by the chaotic, flashing strobes of the emergency vehicles outside.

"What do we have?" the lead paramedic asked, his thick American accent sharp and professional as he dropped to his knees beside Maeve.

"Twenty-eight-year-old female, thirty-eight weeks pregnant," Warren reported instantly, slipping back into his clinical military efficiency. "Blunt force trauma to the lower abdomen sustained approximately ten minutes ago. Patient reports the fetus has stopped moving. She is experiencing severe, localized cramping and potential internal bleeding."

"Alright, sweetheart, we've got you," the paramedic said gently, rapidly assessing Maeve's vitals while his partner prepared an IV line. "We need to get you to the trauma center immediately. On three, we are going to lift you onto the board."

As the paramedics worked to stabilize Maeve, three uniformed police officers stormed through the front door, their hands resting cautiously on their service weapons.

"Who called it in?" the lead officer demanded, scanning the shattered dining room and the bleeding man on the floor.

"I did, Officer," Sergeant Pierce stated, stepping forward and flashing his military credentials. "Sergeant Dale Pierce, U.S. Army Military Police. I have three suspects secured. They are to be charged with aggravated assault, conspiracy, and attempted murder of a pregnant woman."

"This is a mistake!" Pamela shrieked as an officer grabbed her arm and forcefully spun her around to apply handcuffs. "I am a respected member of this community! You cannot arrest me on the word of a soldier!"

"We have it all on high-definition video, ma'am," Dale said calmly, holding up the sealed evidence bag with the blinking camera. He handed it directly to the police sergeant. "The assault, the conspiracy to extort money, and the attempted cover-up. It's all there."

Rex Ellison struggled violently as two officers hauled him off the floor, yanking his arms behind his back. The heavy handcuffs clicked loudly around his wrists. He spat a mixture of blood and saliva onto the hardwood, glaring at Warren with pure, venomous hatred.

"You think this is over, Shaw?" Rex snarled, his rosy face twisted into an ugly, bruised mask. "I have lawyers! I'll be out on bail by midnight, and I'm taking that trust fund!"

"You aren't taking anything but a ride to a holding cell," the police officer growled, shoving Rex roughly toward the hallway.

Jonas did not fight. When the officers pulled him up from the floor, he held his wrists out submissively, weeping silently. He looked at Maeve as the paramedics lifted her onto the stretcher, but she turned her face away, refusing to acknowledge his existence.

"Dad," Maeve gasped, crying out in sudden, intense pain as the paramedics strapped her down. "Dad, please come with me."

"I'm right behind you, Maeve," Warren promised, grabbing her hand. "I'm not letting you out of my sight."
