Chapter 5

The vibrant, cinematic colors of the kitchen felt suddenly oppressive as the reality of Warren’s violence settled over the room. Rex lay groaning among the shattered china, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the pristine floor.
Pamela Ellison’s composed, arrogant facade completely disintegrated. Her fair skin turned a sickly shade of white. She looked at her husband bleeding on the floor, then up at the towering, decorated Colonel standing in the center of the kitchen. Panic, raw and unfiltered, clawed its way up her throat.
"You assaulted him!" Pamela screamed, her voice desperate and shrill. She pointed a trembling finger furiously at Maeve, who was still slumped against the counter, weeping in pain. "She is a liar! Rex didn't touch her! She's just clumsy. Tripped and fell!"
Jonas, witnessing his father get obliterated with a single strike, completely lost his nerve. The thirty-six-year-old husband took three rapid, cowardly steps backward, backing away from his wife and his father-in-law until his shoulders hit the refrigerator.
"It's true, Warren," Jonas stammered, his American accent cracking with pure terror. He held his hands up in a placating gesture, the wedding ring catching the sunlight. "She slipped on some water by the sink. My dad was just trying to help her stand up. Maeve is just confused. The pregnancy hormones are making her hysterical."
Warren did not yell. He walked slowly toward Pamela and Jonas, his polished shoes crunching over a stray piece of broken porcelain.
"She tripped and fell," Warren repeated, his voice dangerously low. "She slipped on some water, and my grandson stopped moving in her womb. That is the story you are going to tell me?"
"Yes!" Pamela insisted, her pearl earrings shaking as she nodded frantically. "She is trying to drive a wedge between Jonas and us! She made the whole thing up to get sympathy!"
"Dad, it hurts," Maeve whimpered from the counter. She sank slowly to the floor, pulling her knees up toward her chest, the soft cream maternity sweater bunching around her swollen abdomen. "He punched me. I swear to God, he punched me."
Warren knelt beside his daughter, his military bearing giving way to a tender, agonizing gentleness. He placed his large, calloused hand over hers on her belly. He could feel her trembling, but beneath his hand, the usually active baby was terrifyingly still.
"I know he did, sweetie," Warren whispered, kissing her forehead. "I know."
Warren stood back up, turning his icy, blue gaze back to Jonas. "You stood there and watched your father strike your pregnant wife. You watched him try to murder your unborn child, and you did nothing."

"I didn't!" Jonas pleaded, tears of fear welling in his eyes. "I didn't see anything, Warren! I swear!"
Before Warren could deliver the punishment Jonas so richly deserved, heavy, urgent footsteps echoed from the front porch.
