Chapter 4

The silence that followed Maeve's words was absolute, ringing with a terrifying, apocalyptic weight. Warren Shaw froze for a microsecond, his blue eyes locked onto his daughter's tear-streaked, agonizing expression. The decorated U.S. Army Colonel had witnessed horrors in combat zones around the world, but nothing compared to the sight of his pregnant daughter collapsing in her own kitchen.
"What did you do?" Warren asked. His voice was not loud. It was a low, vibrating rumble that shook the very foundation of the room, stripped of all humanity.
"Now, listen here, Warren," Rex started, puffing out his chest and hooking his thumbs into his heavy leather belt. His thick American accent carried a foolish, arrogant confidence. "This is a private family matter. Your daughter was getting out of line and throwing a tantrum—"
Warren did not let him finish the sentence.
He moved with a blinding, explosive speed that defied his fifty-nine years. Warren closed the distance between them in two massive strides, his polished military shoes slamming against the hardwood. He did not draw a weapon. He did not throw a closed fist.
Warren strode forward and delivered one powerful, devastating open-handed slap directly across Rex’s face.
The sound of the impact echoed like a gunshot through the bright, sunlit kitchen. The kinetic force behind the strike was staggering, fueled by the pure, unadulterated fury of a father protecting his blood.
Rex’s head snapped violently sideways. The older man’s heavy work boots lost their traction entirely on the polished floor. He staggered backward, his arms flailing wildly as he lost all sense of equilibrium. He crashed backward into the adjacent dining area, his heavy frame slamming directly into the edge of the formal dining table.
The impact was catastrophic. The beautifully set table buckled. Expensive china plates, crystal water glasses, and a heavy floral centerpiece crashed down onto the hardwood floor in a symphony of destruction. Water and shattered porcelain exploded across the room. Rex fell heavily beside a fallen dining chair, groaning as he hit the ground, his rosy skin now blooming with a massive, angry red handprint.

There was no dialogue. The entire kitchen was completely paralyzed.
Warren stood perfectly still amidst the wreckage. His Army dress uniform was immaculate, his breathing entirely controlled. He did not look at the ruined man bleeding on the floor. He simply lowered his hand and slowly turned his head to look directly at Pamela and Jonas.
