Chapter 8

The secure wing of the Langford estate was a subterranean fortress, starkly contrasting the bright, airy, luminous colors of the floors above. Though the walls were reinforced steel and concrete, the interior was furnished with warm, elegant touches—soft rugs, plush sofas, and gentle, recessed lighting—designed to minimize panic.

Mina sat on the edge of a large leather sofa, her sophisticated black maid dress wrinkled from the frantic relocation. Finn lay with his head in her lap, completely exhausted, his small chest rising and falling in a deep sleep. Atlas lay curled on the rug right at their feet, his graying muzzle resting on his paws, his ears twitching at every muffled vibration from the world above.

The heavy, soundproof doors blocked out the noise, but Mina could feel the rhythmic, concussive thuds of explosions vibrating through the floorboards. The war had arrived.

"Are they going to breach the main house?" Mina asked nervously, looking up at Marcus, who stood guarding the reinforced door with an assault rifle strapped to his chest.

"The Boss has the southern gates locked down tight, Miss Hartwell," Marcus replied, checking a glowing security tablet. "Victor Sloane sent a heavy assault team, but they are walking into a meat grinder. We were prepared."

"He knew this would happen," Mina whispered, her expressive brows drawn together in awe and terror. "He threw away his alliance knowing it would cause this."

"Did you think he wouldn't?" Marcus smiled grimly. "Cyrus Langford doesn't tolerate traitors. Especially not ones who touch his kid."

Upstairs, the grand, luminous dining hall was bathed in the flashing red strobes of emergency lighting, overriding the warm golden chandeliers.

Cyrus strode through the carved walnut corridors, his tailored suit jacket discarded, his crisp white shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal the extensive, refined artistic tattoos across his powerful forearms. He carried a heavy, customized automatic weapon with effortless grace.

"Are my men holding the southern gates?" Cyrus asked into his comms earpiece.

"They are pushing hard, Boss!" a capo shouted over the sound of heavy gunfire. "They brought armored vehicles! They're trying to ram the perimeter walls!"

"Do they believe reinforced steel yields to desperation?" Cyrus asked coldly. "Will you deploy the countermeasures on the eastern flank and flank their rear?"

"Moving now, sir!"

Cyrus reached the grand foyer. The massive, gilded mirrors reflected the chaos of his tactical teams moving into position. The air smelled of cordite and burning rubber. The Sloane syndicate had struck fast, fueled by Victor’s outrage over his daughter's humiliation.

Suddenly, a massive, concussive boom echoed from the western wing, shaking the entire mansion. Dust rained down from the crystal chandeliers.

"What was the source of that blast?" Cyrus demanded, his deep voice slicing through the noise.

"Secondary breach, Boss!" Marcus’s voice crackled frantically over the radio. "They faked the southern push! A specialized strike team just blew the western service doors! They are inside the mansion!"

Cyrus’s cold, perceptive eyes narrowed into lethal slits. The western service doors provided direct access to the subterranean stairwell that led to the secure wing.

"Are they moving toward the bunker?" Cyrus asked, his blood running ice cold.

"Yes, sir! We have them pinned in the grand hallway, but they are heavily armed!"

"Will you hold them there until I arrive?" Cyrus asked.

He didn't wait for an answer. He sprinted across the polished marble floors, his extreme, predatory speed belying his large, masculine frame. He was not just a Mafia boss protecting his territory; he was a father rushing to save the only two people who made his dark world bearable.

He rounded the corner into the grand hallway, raising his weapon as he stepped directly into the line of fire, the luminous, elegant warmth of his home permanently shattered by the violence of war.
