Chapter 3

Cyrus’s polished leather shoes made no sound against the marble floor as he crossed the distance. He stepped smoothly beside Mina, deliberately placing his broad, powerful shoulders between the trembling housemaid and his fiancée. It was a subtle, yet unmistakable declaration of protection.

Seven-year-old Finn Langford, who had been standing quietly near his father’s chair, immediately followed. Dressed impeccably in a formal shirt, a fitted waistcoat, and tailored trousers, the boy hurried over and stayed exceptionally close to Cyrus’s leg. His rosy cheeks were pale with ingrained fear.

Evelyn gripped the edge of the dining table, her knuckles turning bone-white against the fine linens. Her engagement ring felt suddenly like a target. She met Cyrus’s cold eyes and desperately restored her concerned, affectionate smile, attempting to reclaim the narrative.

"He’s dangerous around children," Evelyn said, her delivery measured and calm.

She pointed a manicured finger toward the elderly German shepherd. Her eyes searched Cyrus’s angular face for any sign of agreement, desperate for him to prioritize her word over a servant's. "We cannot have a violent animal roaming the halls, Cyrus. What if he turns on Finn next? It isn't safe."

Cyrus did not speak. He gave her a slow, searching look, dissecting the layers of her deception. The luminous, warm golden light offered no sanctuary to the woman caught in his crosshairs.

Beside his father, Finn’s small fingers tightened desperately against the fabric of Cyrus’s dark suit jacket. The little boy had witnessed the cruelty firsthand. He had seen Evelyn strike Mina in the hallway two days prior, and he had seen Atlas lunge forward, barking wildly to place his aging body between the maid and the socialite.

Finn raised his face toward Evelyn. The seven-year-old boy maintained direct eye contact with the woman who was meant to become his stepmother.

"He barks when you hit Mina," Finn stated.

His voice was small and unsteady, trembling in the vast, quiet dining room. He spoke without accusation or anger, simply delivering the devastating, unvarnished truth of a child.

The silence that followed was absolute. It was the silence of a bomb dropping, suspended in the air a microsecond before detonation.

Evelyn’s concerned smile stopped completely. The expression shattered into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror. Her eyes darted frantically from Finn’s innocent face to Cyrus’s unreadable, lethal stare, searching for a response, searching for a way out of the trap she had built for herself.

Cyrus watched her without moving a single muscle. His extremely short stubble seemed to bristle with the suppressed violence boiling beneath his calm exterior.

Behind him, Mina lowered her chin, fighting back a sob as tears finally breached her eyelashes and slipped down her fair cheeks. Atlas remained entirely still beside her, a silent, loyal guardian.

"Finn, you little liar!" Evelyn suddenly shrieked, the poise of her high-society upbringing completely dissolving. "How dare you speak to me like that! I have never touched her!"

Every guest in the room remained completely silent, paralyzed by the overwhelming tension, facing Cyrus.

"Do you believe my son is a liar?" Cyrus asked, his deep voice dropping an octave, echoing off the carved walnut furniture.

"She put him up to this!" Evelyn cried, pointing furiously at Mina. "She is trying to ruin us, Cyrus! You cannot believe the word of a child and a maid over your future wife!"

"Did you assume my ring granted you the privilege of abusing my staff?" Cyrus asked.

He didn't wait for her to answer. He turned his imposing frame slightly, his cold eyes sweeping over the frozen faces of the thirty elite guests seated at the tables.

"Have you all finished your meals?" Cyrus asked the room at large.
