Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling filled the grand dining hall with a brilliant, luminous warmth. The light was beautifully bright and airy, reflecting off gilded mirrors and the rich, ivory-paneled walls that lined the expansive room. Below, tall ivory candles glowed steadily inside heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames dancing between low, elegant arrangements of white roses. The tables were flawlessly dressed, adorned with gold-rimmed porcelain, heavy silver cutlery, and sparkling crystal stemware that caught every glint of the soft, golden illumination. The guests, an assembly of the city's elite, were entirely composed of fair-skinned white Americans. Their rosy complexions flushed with wine and laughter, their melodic American accents blending into a sophisticated symphony of wealth and power.

At the head of the room stood Cyrus Langford. As a notorious Mafia boss, his reputation for ruthlessness was sharply contrasted by his movie-star-handsome features. Deeply masculine, Cyrus possessed powerful shoulders that perfectly filled out his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face featured a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jawline, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back naturally, though a few loose strands fell over his fair forehead. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers, utilizing generous negative space to maintain an air of dangerous elegance, while a small, intricate tattoo peeked from the side of his neck.

"Is the vintage to your liking, Senator?" Cyrus asked, his deep, low voice vibrating through the space with a measured, deliberate pause.

"It is an absolute triumph, Cyrus," the older man replied, raising his crystal glass. "To the happy couple. May your future be as bright as this beautiful room."

Beside Cyrus stood Evelyn Sloane, his fiancée. She was draped in a sculpted emerald silk evening gown that clung perfectly to her slender frame, paired with blinding diamond earrings and a massive engagement ring. Her rosy skin glowed as she offered an affectionate, radiant public smile to the guests, masking the fiercely controlling temperament that simmered just beneath her beautiful surface.

Moving gracefully among the champagne velvet dining chairs was Mina Hartwell. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid possessed a beauty that easily rivaled a movie star’s. She had a softly heart-shaped face, delicate cheekbones, expressive brows, and hair pinned into a loose, elegant French twist. Her fair skin caught the warm light. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a slim fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, white collar, and matching cuffs completed her immaculate uniform.

Mina approached a nearby serving console, her movements careful and deliberate. Trailing faithfully beside her was Atlas, an elderly twelve-year-old German shepherd with a graying muzzle and a worn leather collar.

"There you go, Atlas," Mina whispered softly, finishing the placement of a small, polished water bowl beside the console.

As Mina straightened her posture, the stiff fabric of her black sleeve shifted upward. For a fraction of a second, the harsh, bright light illuminated a small, white medical dressing taped securely over her fair forearm—a wound caused by Evelyn’s cruel mistreatment earlier that week.

Atlas let out a soft huff, resting his heavy, graying muzzle lightly against Mina’s leg in a gesture of absolute devotion.

From the head of the table, Cyrus’s cold, perceptive eyes tracked the movement. He noticed the white bandage immediately, his sharp gaze locking onto the injury. Slowly, he shifted his eyes toward Evelyn.

Evelyn, catching the direction of his stare, looked directly into Cyrus’s eyes. She instantly adopted a deeply concerned expression.

"That animal attacked her," Evelyn stated, her American accent soft and confidently reassuring.

A faint, satisfied smile touched the corners of her mouth as she waited for him to accept her explanation. After speaking, she cut her eyes away from her fiancé, giving Mina a brief, venomous warning glance.
