Chapter 10

The silence in the secure bunker grew heavy and suffocating. The warm, elegant lighting suddenly felt sinister. Cyrus stood perfectly still, his angular face hardening into a mask of pure, unadulterated ice. The strategic brilliance of Victor Sloane’s retaliation was staggering. He hadn't just sought to kill Cyrus; he had sought to cripple his infrastructure by taking the syndicate’s chief medical officer.
"Did they secure the hospital wing?" Cyrus asked into his comms, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, vibrating calm.
"Negative, Boss. They hit it fast and vanished. Dr. Evans is gone. They left a message," the capo reported, his voice trembling slightly.
"What does the message say?" Cyrus asked.
"It says... 'A life for an insult. If you want the doctor back, you trade the maid.'"
Mina gasped, her hands flying to cover her mouth. Her fair, rosy skin turned ashen. She staggered backward, hitting the edge of the leather sofa. The war wasn't just about a broken engagement anymore; Victor Sloane had made it entirely personal.
"Mr. Langford..." Mina breathed, her eyes wide with sheer panic. "They took an innocent man because of me. You have to give me to them."
"Do you believe I negotiate with terrorists?" Cyrus asked, turning his powerful, masculine frame to face her.
"He will kill the doctor!" Mina cried, tears spilling over her lashes. "Dr. Evans saved my arm tonight. He is a good man. I cannot let him die for a housemaid!"
"Are you merely a housemaid to me?" Cyrus asked, stepping swiftly toward her, closing the distance until she had to look straight up into his perceptive eyes.
"I am nothing, Cyrus!" Mina sobbed, using his first name in her desperation. "I am a liability! Give me to them and end this war!"
Cyrus reached out with both hands, his refined artistic tattoos stark against the black fabric of her dress. He gripped her upper arms firmly, holding her steady, forcing her to focus entirely on his face.
"Do you think I tore my empire apart tonight just to hand you over to my enemies?" Cyrus asked, his voice dropping to a fierce, protective whisper. "Do you think I would ever let Victor Sloane touch a single hair on your head?"
"But the doctor..." Mina wept, struggling weakly against his grip.
"Will you trust me to bring him back alive?" Cyrus asked, his cold eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fire.
Mina looked into his eyes and saw the absolute, terrifying certainty of a king who refused to lose. He was not a man who compromised. He was a man who destroyed.
"How?" Mina whispered.
"Does a man who kidnaps a doctor expect me to arrive with a white flag, or does he expect an army?" Cyrus asked, a dark, lethal smile touching the corners of his mouth.
He released her arms and turned to Marcus, who was standing at attention by the heavy steel door.
"Are the tactical teams fully mobilized and ready for deployment?" Cyrus asked.
"Yes, Boss. We have fifty men ready to move on your word," Marcus confirmed.
"Will you prepare the armored convoy?" Cyrus asked, picking up his customized weapon from the table where he had set it down. He racked the slide with a sharp, metallic clack. "Will you ensure we have the coordinates for Victor Sloane’s primary compound?"
"Already loaded into the GPS, sir."
Cyrus turned back to Mina one last time. He looked from her beautiful, tear-stained face to the sleeping form of his son, and the loyal dog resting beside him. He had found something worth protecting in the luminous, elegant warmth of his home, and he was prepared to burn the rest of the city to ash to keep it safe.
"Will you wait for me to return?" Cyrus asked softly, his deep voice carrying a promise that echoed in the quiet bunker.
Mina stood tall, her graceful posture returning despite her fear. She nodded, her expressive brows drawn together in fierce resolve. "I will wait for you."
May you like
"Shall we go end a syndicate?" Cyrus asked the room.
He didn't wait for an answer. He turned his broad shoulders and walked out of the heavy steel doors, marching back into the smoke and the violence, ready to bring the entire weight of his empire down upon the men who had dared to threaten his family. The heavy doors sealed shut, leaving the fate of the city hanging in the balance.
